Nevadans?

Picture the comparison of hatchery chick v. breeder chick as being kind of like the difference of getting a car off the factory line and one that's custom hand-built....so quality, attention to detail, availability.

Wow, it's definitely spring! The greenhouse is up... I planted onions, lettuce, and some chard yesterday... Almost all of my nightshade seedlings are up... I planted 5 buckets of fingerling potatoes to grow in the greenhouse... 5 duck eggs have been under Jerk the lavender ameraucana for about a week...
and Miss Chin, my new doe, had 9 babies in the last 2 hours!

(I finally named the breeding rabbits, since we've been successful and we know we're going to keep them... just not naming the offspring!)

No pictures yet. I stuck my head in long enough to check that they were all alive, and she started to get a little freaked and jumped on top of them, so I backed out. They're all either blue or chinchilla coloring.

I have lurked a little but not posted in awhile. I think my cochin may have given up being broody. I have several scars on my hand from her. she's quite the mean one! i sat out in the run with the chickens on Saturday. It was so nice out. Haven't done that in a while. My usual buddies hopped up on my lap.

Chicharo is still sick. He's on his 4th round of antibiotics--for 28 days this time. He's getting so skinny.

Lookn at this!

My cat can relate to that one!
Rough start on my 2013 breedings. First none of my American Sable does were taking, then my Britannia Petite doe wouldn't get bred. Finally got one of my Sable does bred then her whole litter froze then she died (it was my seal doe I imported from Canada) found out my Petite buck was missing some very important boy parts. Finally Sunday brought an end to my bad luck getting babies. I had two Sable litters born 7 minus 2 DOAs in one litter 4 born on the wire floor the other litter. Monday I come home from work to a litter of 8 minus the one DOA. I'm picking up my new Petite buck at West Coast Classic in May along with a newly accepted broken doe

Sorry you had so much bad luck . congrats on your new litters, though.
Well, we got the coop, put together for the most part today. The girls are still,in the brooder but at least we will be ready for them when they get bigger. They are so fun to watch! Their personalities are starting to show as they'd get more comfortable with us.
that's great you've got your coop mostly done.
Well Missy came over for 2 days and helped me get the hoop house end panels done. She is seriously talented and the panels look fantastic and very sturdy! I'm taking pics of the progress and will post them all together when we are done. I am so excited with the progress! Usually these projects take 5 times longer than I expect but this time we got an amazing amount of work done!!!

exciting! we'll definitely need to see photos at some point.

ETA: Finally getting eMail notifications again! For some reason, GoDaddy decided to start flagging eMail from BYC as SPAM last month.

my notifications have been horrible lately too.
I got my greenhouse done today! It only took 3 hours... a much smaller scale operation than Sunny's. I added a convection heating section this year.

And my darling bald daughter...
the greenhouse looks great and sahara can really pull off the bald look! She looks older now.
One thing I started looking into and trying a little the last couple years is growing my own chicken feed....like sunflowers, wheat, winter squash I mostly free range all summer and supplment some too-and of course all the left over goodies, but one day I would like to be able to feed them 100% off what I can grown and process myself. I I have been researching it and seeing what kind of feed I could grow in the summer and store to feed in the winter. I haven't really researched the Modesto Milling Products but I will have to look into it. :)
That would be great to have homegrown feed! I hope you can do it some day. I would have to move to the country to be able to do that.
They are a cool bird. I'm a little behind with building my first coupe and my chickens need to get evicted from my garage first. The dust is amazing. I'll never get any type of birds before the home is built first.
I'm still finding chick dust in my house from my first group of chicks and in the garage from the second ones. Next time I think i'll be able to brood right in the coop.

Love all the pics, shaved heads, bunnies and OMG, everyone's gardening is driving me crazy. I need help bad!

I'm trying to get myself moving. Got back from Disneyland, Cheer Nationals and got to spend time with my oldest son, who I haven't seen in 7 years! I'm sore! Dakotah did a great job of taking care of all the animals and I came home and left a quail pen jammed with all of my biggest Cots and went out this morning and only 3 in the pen. I found one more in the yard and the rest are gone. I need to candle for the Easter hatch, so I can set all the eggs I have here. You guys want Black Copper and Blue Copper Marans??? OMG!!! I have soooooo many eggs right now and lots of other breeds too. No room in any of the bators till I clean one and candle. I have a FBCM hen that will not leave the favorite nest box, so we just snatch eggs out every couple of hours. I was so affraid I'd come home to starving rabbits and eggs all over. Not only did he feed who needed feeding, he set eggs in separate cartons by which day they were collected. Thing is I forgot to tell him what to write on each one, so only a few are marked. My Silver Phoenix hen that wants to sit, didn't get collected from. He was affraid to open the pen and have that roo fly out. Truthfully I'm glad he didn't, so she's been siiting since Saturday. There's 7 eggs under her and if more are laid today, I'll just mark them and collect fresh ones as she sits. I knew she was going to get away with this eventually. LOL I think I have over 8 dozen eggs. I'm thinking I might try again to sell these before tomorrow, so I can just start over when i have more space.

I have chicks under my broody !!!!! only 3 hopefully the other 4 eggs will hatch

I found a dead baby.

I don't know if it's because I was in the nest earlier, counting babies, and I upset the mom. I didn't have this problem with my other doe. So I sealed up the room, and nobody's allowed to go in there except for me, and only to feed/water and remove any other dead ones. At least it was only one, not a massive baby-eating disaster. The others seemed fine... the fur in the nest was moving around. But I didn't put my hand in to check. At least the mom pulled the baby out of the nest, so I can expect that any other fatalities will be easy to remove without disturbing the others.

Congrats on the babies! I agree with Seth, it's pretty common with rabbits. Yes spring can't be far now. At least I hope not! I have seedlings coming out my ears. What was I thinking? Hope I can sell most of them at the Farmers Market this Sunday.

Wow! I haven't been to Disneyland in over a decade. 7 years is a verrrry long time! Jeez, I'm pitching a fit if it's been a few months!!! Course mine are only 7 hours away at the farthest. Hope you had a great time and a wonderful reunion with your oldest DS.
I have chicks under my broody !!!!! only 3 hopefully the other 4 eggs will hatch [quote/] CONGRATS! Sorry about Chicharo Elizabeth. :(
That's what I suspected, but I wasn't sure. Thanks for clarifying!
You're welcome. :) Stacy!!! Haven't seen you on here in ages!!! Welcome back. :)

Spring? I got my first sunburn of the year yesterday! Just so y'all know and make sure you get something in place... I don't know about Reno but out here in Fallon we live under a migratory path and I wanted to let you know that the lice this year are horrible! I spent all day yesterday out with my birds getting rid of their lice. I'm about half way done. Doing one at a time is quite time consuming.
