Nevadans?

Hey Gryphonica, I'm not too great at playing doctor, but if you post here -> https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/10/emergencies-diseases-injuries-and-cures , hopefully you can get a fast and accurate responce. The only thing I can think of is checking her legs and foot for a cut or laceration, and check for bumblefoot. These probably wouldn't keep her from eating though, so I hope you get more help on the thread.

Missy and Sheryl, saw the article.

Very nice!!

If she sprained her leg, she may be in a lot of pain. I know humans and chickens are different, but when my friend broke her arm, she didn't want to do anything, including eat or drink. Is there a way to force feed her water? Like maybe with an eye dropper or syringe?

Well, I just found out today that my girls have lice

After reading tons of stories and articles, I'm relieved to know humans can't get it (although the thought still makes my head itchy!!). I think I've caught it early because it doesn't seem to be bothering them. They just do normal preening and there is no feather picking yet. I'm going to buy some DE as soon as I can, but I was wondering if anybody here has had this problem and if you could give me some pointers? I tried keeping everything clean, so this is kind of kick to my pride, lol.

I checked my new girls still in "quarantine" and I couldn't see any bugs, so they'll remain there until my other girls are better. Thanks!

I worm my chickens regularly with Ivomec injectable, and it also kills lice. You will need to repeat treatment in 10 days to break the life cycle of the lice (when the lice eggs on your birds hatch.) You can get Ivomec at the feed store (it needs to be refrigerated) and will need a syringe/needle to draw it out of the vile. The dosage is 4cc per gallon of water (only water they get during treatment) for 2 days. Make it fresh each day. After you get the lice under control you can use "Die No Mite" strips (pyrethrin) hung in the coops doorway or nest boxes to help control the lice. You will need to buy these online from Meyer Hatchery. I also like to put DE in my birds nest boxes, under the shavings in the coop and in their dust bathing holes.

My birds had a bad outbreak of lice this year because the ground squirrels moved in. So don't feel like you did something wrong. This is a common problem. You can read about the use of Ivomec and other great information at Sweetwater poultry (Linda Hamid's) website under diseases.

Good luck

Thank you so much!! I'll pick some up asap! I read somewhere that you can also use wood ash in the same manner as DE. My neighbor uses a wood stove, so I'll see if I can have some of his leftover ashes until I can buy some DE and Ivomec. I personally want DE so that I can use it too, lol. I saw an article talking about how many Americans are infected with worms and parasites and don't even know it!

Plus people report many other benefits after using it, like healthier skin & hair and lower cholesterol & blood pressure!

Your little chicks are so adorable!! All of my girls were at least a month or older when I got them, so I never had the joy of cuddling little fuzzy chicks, lol! If one of my girls go broody in the spring, I'm tempted to "lease" a rooster, lol!
