Oh, Sunny.... Bummer daaz! It is SO hard to lose a member of the pack. My condolences to you and yours. If it is any consolation, in Jewish** folklore it is considered very prestigious and fortuitous (i.e., a front-of-the-line in Heaven type of thing) to pass on a religious holiday.....not that your dog was Kosher. (Well, who knows; right?)

(**BTW, folks, I was not raised Jewish. I was raised in a community where there were LOTS of kids that were, though. Got along great with them and then -- at the tender age of 48 -- found out I am of Jewish decent via research by Kitty Kelly in her tell-all tome "The Royals"... as I said, "Who knew?" We cousins all joke about it now at family gatherings as it could explain the accountant/engineering/math gene we all have and the particular bump/bent to our prominent noses.)

Okay.... Sorry, folks. That was an unusual tangent. Back to the matter at hand...

I have always found the best way for me to honor a beloved dog is to give another worthy dog a shot at a good home. And when it has not been convenient for me to add to the household pack, I donate to the rescue groups in said pack member's name. Dogs are such good souls and SO good for the soul....nothing like walking through the door after a rat-nasty day and your own little resident pep squad is SO happy to see YOU! They just make the world a bit more all right..... Dogs rock (sez she with a collective of 185 lbs. of canine kids)

Visited my sister over Christmas who was the recipient of my last mail-order hatching... OMG! Those cute little chicks from May are BIG chickens! And they're laying nice big BSL eggs.

At present I am spending the holidays up in the CA wine country and it is downright SOGGY up here. So much so that my husband and I walked out onto the wooden deck and both did a banana-peel slip on the moss that was growing thereon. Oops. Needless to say, this seasonal slime is NOT something we experience in the desert. Reality check! (We're fine, btw...just more humiliated than anything because after the age of, oh, maybe four you sort of stop expecting to fall down whilst walking.)

BEST BARGAIN ALERT: For those of you that partake and enjoy wine, the DEAL OF THE YEAR is to be found at your local Cost Plus World Market. Hustle ye down there and pick up a bottle or case of the Electric Reindeer Chardonnay. While supplies last it is 50% off as it is considered holiday fare AND if you buy a case they knock off an extra 10% (so in CA all of $2.29/bottle and $27/case...probably a tad higher in NV). This is an extraordinarily fine wine and you will not go wrong serving it to friends, family, bosses. I would rate it in the Top 3 chards I have ever drunk...and from someone semi-residing and sampling for the past three decades in the Napa wine country, *that* is telling. Far better than most $20/bottle chards out there. This is a bona fide steal! (And I am not affiliated with Cost Plus in any way, except that I am duly impressed by this vintage)

Anyway, I am wishing EVERYONE in the Nevada branch of BYC a fantabulous holiday season and safe New Year's Eve. Stay cozy, warm and count your blessings as we do have many. May we all have a prosperous, healthful and happy new year!

Hello all and Happy Holidays, I am back in NY again for the winter break. Not really enjoying the cold and snow but the kids are of course.

Spent the first Christmas ever with my family here and it was a wonderful one.

Here are the kids and I enjoying the snow.

Sounds like a wonderful pack of fun! I love the idea of an older rescue dog. Especially after finding out that Horsefeatherz sweet Hannah is a rescue! I love German shepherds but would consider any shorter haired shepherding type of dog. My last 2 dogs were half Chow and I got so tired of hair in my food that they became outside/garage dogs.

I have bad news for you, no mater what length the hair is it always gets in the food! You just don't notice it as much when it is short

OH Sunny!

So sorry. I almost wish there were pups here for you.

My Corso got bit by a black widow 3 weeks ago. Got her right near her mouth and jaw. The lump was the size of a softball. It's still draining. YUCK what a mess.

I was going to breed her her next heat. I want a show puppy, but she couldn't even eat and lost all kinds of weight. Just now getting some meat on her bones. Poor baby spent 2 weeks on rice and hamburger. Anyway her heat is due this month or next and I doubt she'll be up for breeding by then, so again I cancel. bummer. This is probably the last heat I would have bred her too. Tried twice while Bill was alive, but she hated the male. Go figure. So Bill didn't get his pup.

Speaking if pups, this new one (GSD) went from sweet and mellow to H**L with paws. She's smart, but I have no patients right now and she should be further along. She's almost got down waiting with the others for her food though.

Oh and yeah. Unless you have something like a poodle, hair is hair. I used to tell Bill that I swept up a chihuahua every day from Isis' shedding. My little poodle was being taken care of by one of Bill's friends while we were moving to this house and got out and chased up. They called and we turned around and looked for him. We went back several times and never found him, but people said they had seen him. Said when they tried to catch him he ran. Only weighed 4 lbs. I have no idea now, how to find the peoples house. Number wasn't in his phone and he never did write down the address. They don't even know that Bill is gone and figure we don't want to talk to them now. That got off topic. THing is I never had a Taz hair on me. They shed, but it clumps, so stays till you brush them out. Most people say they don't shed, be they do just different. Maybe if you don't mind a mix a poodle mix would keep the hair to a minimum. I just don't do mixed breeds.

Chow hair really floats though. It is hollow like Malamutes. The hair protects them from heat and cold (like polar bear fur) but it it so light it floats everywhere! I've had a lot of dogs and trust me chow hair is a whole different animal.

I won't ever do a Chow or Chow mix again.

Thanks Kim! That's very sweet but I am so partial to German shepherds I think I'll stick to the herding dogs at least. I've also had Australian shepherds and they are great dogs too. Except for super long haired, thick coated, herding dogs like collies I'm fine with just about any type of herding dog.

Ok you got me.

Maybe not any type of herding dog. Although they are great dogs. I just couldn't afford the feeding bills.
