Nevadans?

Oh boy, the list has about 28 items on it! We grow a large-scale garden here... at least, for what little space we have. A friend is letting me use his garden space next year, so we can grow twice as much! With the special diets that my husband and kids are on, mass-producing veggies is crucial.

I normally start at least 300 seedlings a year, and whatever my friends and family don't need get donated to people. But this year, my son has a VERY expensive Boy Scout camp opportunity, so my daughter and I are going to ask a modest price for our extra plants to try to fund his trip.

But these are the highlights:

Tomatoes:
Cherokee Purple (heirloom)
Pineapple (heirloom)
Early Girl (for the containers)
Golden Gem (cherry)
Indigo Rose (BRAND new variety, released just this year to a few select seed companies. Red on the inside, purple/blue on the outside.)

Peppers:
Mucho Nacho (huge jalapeno)
Sahuaro (mild Anaheim)
Sweet Spot (banana pepper)
Thai (I use this in my cooking and canning more than any other pepper!)

Carrots:
Deep Purple
Atomic Red

Squash:
4 varieties of early-season winter squash

Corn:
Painted Mountain (a short-season Indian corn bred for both fresh and dried consumption, for cold climates)

Then we're going to do 3 kinds of short-season eggplant, wild lettuce mix, spinach, kale, cucumbers, pole beans, snap beans, shelling beans, swiss chard, snow and sugar snap peas, summer squash, and potatoes in yellow, purple, and pink.

I'm totally interested in sharing or trading seeds and plants, if you want to try out any of these.

Not sure what I plan on starting this year yet. We had such a short season last summer. Once I figure it out I'll let you know. Would definitely like to trade a couple of tomato plants at least.

Also have my eye on some bean plants and the purple artichokes, red leaf lettuces and the mild italian eggplant. Time and money will decide for me. I should take a look at the choices now to get a better idea of what I'd like to put up this year.

That's why we did it so early. Last year money wasn't a problem, but I ALMOST waited too long and was stressing about whether I would get my seeds before it was time to start the tomatoes and peppers. But even with the weather, the water cost, and a weird incident where someone came over our fence (obviously not with good intentions) and shredded the garden while getting away from the dogs, we still saved a LOT of money by growing at home. So we made sure to order early, so it's a more guaranteed thing.

Oh my gosh! Is this a Reno thing? We had folks coming over our fence at the old place! But we lived on the other side of a field so we figured that was the reason.

The dogs chased them off twice but by the 3rd time both the dogs had passed and Steve had to chase them off! Did I mention how much I love living up here where it's quiet?

Tamales are steaming!

Missy, you are really prepared for your garden this year! I got a seed catalog yesterday and had fun marking some possibilities. I really want to have a more successful garden this year.

Hi everyone who is still on this thread or reading it. I am new here and am thinking about getting a few chicks in Spring, just doing a lot of research for now. I was wondering if anyone one here is in Lyon County, NV - I am in the Dayton area. I tried calling animal control awhille ago and the lady I got said she was unsure how many pet chickens we are allowed to have here but was sure we are not allowed to have pet roosters, she suggested I look up the county ordinances online. So I did .. no mention of chickens, pet or otherwise. Lots of rules for dogs, cats, sheep, goats and other livestock but no rules on chickens. Anyone know the number we are allowed?

A little about me. I am a stay at home mom, who homeschools the kiddo, has a couple of small dogs, and have been wanting chickens for a couple of years but never thought I would be able to have the time to take care of them. Since life has dratically changed in the last 2 years and I am now able to be a full time mom, and have more time than know what to do with. I have been able to pursue all those things I never thought I would have time for like canning, pickling, knitting, crocheting and gardening ... the only thing left that really want to add into the mix are some chickens. I have slowly gotten the famly to agree and have picked up a few supplies along the way such as feeders, waterers, heat lamp and red bulb, a pre-fab coop and run (that I will put together soon) - which will go inside my larger 10 x 10 powder-coated dog run for added protection and more room for them as they are older. But I don't want to get them and then find out that I am not suppose to have them at all. We are in a residental area but ar on a little over a 1/4 acre. Aadvice is wonderful, I have poured over chicken raising booksny other ideas on how to figure out how many hens Lyon county allows as pets?

Also of course any advice is appreciated, I have been pouring over websites and chicken raising books and have decided I really want a couple Australorps and maybe a Gold Orphington or Ameraucana. Any experience with these breeds?

Thank you

I attribute it to living so close to downtown... we get transient people walking down our street all the time. This neighborhood isn't high-income by any means, but there's a general attitude of "Hey, we're all trying the best we can." There have been a lot of robberies around here, though. A week ago, we had someone try to walk into our house at 2pm on a Sunday. I don't know who it was... I got to the door too late... but it was someone who was trying pretty hard to get past the deadbolt, and my Pyrenese/German Shepard was NOT happy with that. And the week before, a block from our house, a resident shot an intruder in his house and put him in the hospital. It's a little frightening, but we have 3 big dogs, and my husband and I teach self defense classes together, so it could be worse.

Kellee, welcome! I know there are a couple people here from Dayton, but if Reno is so relaxed about the chicken rules, I'm sure Dayton is. Your breeds sound great! If you don't want to pay for shipping, I know Sierra Feed here on S. Virginia St. orders those breeds in the spring.

I will absolutely check out Sierra Feed I drive by it all the time but have yet to go in. I am currently bribing my son to move all the river rock out of the future coop area. It is a slow going process as a teenage boy he forgets anything told to him more than 5 seconds ago. I may have to threaten to make him live in the coop and the chickens in his room. LOL

welcome kellee!!
sounds like you will fit in perfectly here, lol. Im not certin about lyon county but here in washoe we have ZERO laws against owning chickens and now laws about how many you can have. roosters are allowed unless there are complaints, then they become a neuscance which is where that ugly loophole comes in saying that you cant have any animals that create a disturbance.

As far as sierra feed goes they have terrible service and are not knowledgable whatsoever in what they sell. I had a huge issue with them and chicks last spring and from what i hear i am not the only one. they are grotesquely unorganized and very honestly their lack of professionalism screwed my out of my spring chicks. Im sorry everyone but thats just my experience and i used to work around the corner from them and dealt with them often until the chick thing happened. Now I only go to greens feed and i LOOOOOVE them. There is a place in Carson called "S&W Feed". I got my very first chicks from them. an easter egger and a NHR. They are two years old now and are happy, healthy, and super friendly. The people there are really nice and that store is GIGANTIC. just food for thought. I hate sierra feed PASSIONATELY.

Hi Kellee! Welcome to the Nevada thread!
frow.gif
I homeschooled my daughter for years and my son, for a very short time, just to get him caught up on some things. I know of many folks that have chickens in Dayton and we have at least one person from Dayton here on this thread. Chicken ordinances are usually governed by each city not counties. If you are outside of the city limits then you are in luck! Unless you are in an HOA that prohibits chickens. I have found that the laws about chickens vary greatly from city to city in Nevada. Some very rural areas like Elko are super strict whereas Reno has very few limits. You must keep them on your property and if your animals bother the neighbors and they get 3 or more complaints then you may have to get rid of them.
sad.png

Well that and if you have more than 10,000 you need a special system for waste disposal.
lol.png

Anyway I will let the folks from your area address your concerns about the regs in Dayton. I'll go add you to the Opening Post now.

Elizabeth how'd the tamales come out? I bet they were super good!
