Nevadans?

SagebrushMama - Well we haven't met then but we will eventually I'm sure. I love it up there too and I would love to live there someday. Yeah, I understand about the plumbing and wiring all over there. Grandma had her house all redone in the seventies along with her addition. She built a great kitchen too, I love looking out the window into the valley when I would do the dishes.

I need to add something about raising pumpkins... mulch like crazy. I used way too much water the first year, until I discovered this (very duh) trick. So much that we decided not to grow jack-o-lanterns anymore because it was too much water consumption for something we couldn't use as food. This year we're doing sugar pumpkins, so we can get some good food out of them.

The first year I grew pumpkins I won for the largest pumpkin @ 135 lbs! I had to pick it to take it to the contest, wonder how big it would have gotten. I have 5 that were huge like that but then the deer found them and I haven't grown them since. I have 4 raised beds, all enclosed to keep the deer out so I don't have room within the garden to grow them.

Like Ron, I do grow mammoth zucchini and squash! Boy, turn your head on that stuff and you need a wheelbarrow!

HOLY CRUD YOU GUYS. I was beginning to forget what eggs looked like. however...yesterday we got five eggs and today we got four! i think the girls are getting happy again!

I was gone yesterday so I collected eggs tonight....24!!!! 2 from the Polish pen! They even used a third laying box and I found some shell so they broke one, so that means all 7 EE, 2 Sexlinks, 1 RIR, 1 Australorp & 1 Polish are laying!

So I was trying to figure out why they're laying like its spring.....and then I remembered that its because it feels like spring, it's so warm!

what color are your polish eggs? I have four possible bantam layers. The polish, the two cochins, and my showgirl. I get a pointy white egg and a round light brown one. My polish and the two cochins are squatting for me so im ruling out the showgirl...

Are you using a light in the new coop too? My egg production had dropped way off until a week or so ago when I put the light out there. Now I'm getting 18-20 every two days again!

Yep but this time its just a light, NOT A HEAT LAMP, lol. we turn it off around 730. I had innitially started using it so they could get the idea of how to use the new perches but after getting an egg or two ive decided it stays!

Aubrey - Great job with the ladies!

I guess since the coons can't get to them now they decided it was safe to lay again, not to mention the light thingy too!

Howdy SagebrushMaMa!!!

Welcome to our homey (homie?) little thread. It's a real nice posse of folks.

- - - - - -

Not much doing with the chicks today....other than one has sprouted extraordinarily long wing tip feathers. Makes it look like a rower in a scull boat.

Actually, I pretty much was tied up with all things plumbing around the house today. I also have to call the Manna Pro folks.... Looks like I got a bad bag of chick starter (thank goodness I bought two, so I have something to feed the little darlings). Opened it up and it smelled like mold and mushrooms. Just not right. Went back to the feed store and the clerks were ready to ring me a refund after sniffing it, but had to go back to the manager for approval. She comes out and says, "It's all right. Nothing wrong with it." I turn to the clerks, "Would you feed it to your very expensive chicks?" "Noooooooo." Manager, "Well, we can't take it back or refund because it has been opened." "Well, if I had opened it before I left the store, I wouldn't have bought it. Kind of hard to tell the quality without doing that..." Anyway, guess I have to take it up with the folks in St. Louis and possibly ship it back for testing. Bother. I mean, it's a $5+ bag of feed, you know? Probably be more hassle than if I just dumped it.
