re: definitions of vegan vs. vegetarian... I'm a died-in-the-wool carnivore and didn't know there was a distinction between the two terms. I knew there was an ovo-lacto something. I shall be more careful in my generic categorization. I really thought vegan and vegetarian were interchangeable.
Vegans don't eat anything with a momma!

I'm hoping to get some advice here before my shopping trip. My husband has just been asked to go to Manila for a month to train on the systems over there. I'm excited for him, but it looks like he'll be gone Valentine's Day. And I haven't made him a "date night" meal in a long time. So here's what I'm wondering...

Entree:
Swordfish sticks broiled in a panko/lemon/parsley crust, paired with a daikon/shallot/fresh dill tartar sauce
OR
Coconut-crusted shrimp and scallops with a sweet chili/horseradish cocktail sauce, with chopped fresh chiles
(This one will probably depend on what's cheapest)

Salad:
Spring mix or wild greens topped with a cilantro/meyer lemon/fresh raspberry balsamic

Bread:
From-scratch garlic sticks using a rich egg bread recipe and fresh garlic
OR
Polenta slices drizzled with a garlic butter herb sauce

Sparkling white grape juice, since neither of us drink.

Dessert:
(Here's where I really need help deciding. It needs to be mostly from scratch.)
Sorbet made from fresh pineapple and limes
OR
Cheesecake topped with homemade caramel
OR
Flan with freshly whipped cream and a couple raspberries

Panna cotta would be good, too, but I've never made that. Or flan, for that matter.
Which do you think would go best?

Umm. I'd say the shrimp (Only because I dont like swordfish), and salad, and Sorbet. And by the way, you adjectives are beautiful.

Aubrey, I love the pics of your hens!! There are so many random shapes and colors, lol.

I love this gardening in the bucket idea. It's pretty cool. :]

Congrats on the duck egg!!!

Elizabeth are you still wanting pumpkin seeds from my pumpkins I grew last year? I have a lot of them from the 20 lb pumpkin John grew.

thanks for the offer, sheryl but I decided to just try growing the small sugar pumpkins this year. If I succeed at that, maybe I can try the larger ones another year. I'm going to put a few raised beds in the front this year where I get a lot of sun all day. we'll see how it works.

For those who are gonna do the bucket garden genius idea, I found the best place to get buckets today! I am now gonna try buckets because of how upset I was when I lost my first Garden last year to the frost and had to start all over. This way I can put them in the garage overnight if the weather gets crappy. I love the idea of a mobile garden! Anyways,I stopped at Super Burrito today and got 16, 5 gallon buckets free! I also called Both Costcos in town and I get to pick up more free buckets on Sunday from both stores and then I will have all I need.WooHoo,I cant wait to start. So Super Burrito and Costco will give free buckets FYI.

is anyone else having notification problems with their byc subscriptions? ever since the new design, it is really hit or miss for me on the emails.

It all sound delicious. Can I be your valentine?

For dessert, I would pick the flan or the cream puffs sheryl suggested. And I would pick the bread over the polenta.

okay guys i just got rid of red and gilbert which means that I am down to 14 hens and one rooster, so therefor 7 more hens only equals 21 hens and a rooster.
my coop is 8x11 which means i can comfortably hold 22 chickens but since a few of mine are bantams we might as well just say it can hold 30...
with that logic im still okay, right?!
absolutely! and I would hire you to be my chicken mathematician in a heartbeat.
