Nevadans?

Regarding those "humane" traps...

We have a big mouse problem in our house, since the house is so old. We battle them every year, and just manage to stay on top enough to live decently. I used to do the mouse bait a lot, but then one of the dogs found some, and we had a $225 vet bill. I actually still use the bait, but only in areas like inside cupboards that the dogs can't get into.

We bought two humane traps for about $30 apiece at Green's Feed, thinking it would save us money. They are somewhat effective... they do attract the mice. But we'd wake up in the middle of the night with mice clanking around in there and screaming to get out, and we'd have to empty it at 2am to make it stop. And if they didn't wake us up screaming, half of them were dead by morning anyway. I would check the traps once or twice a day, and still half of them died. Within a month, the mechanisms didn't work as smoothly, and the mice would get back out after a few hours in the trap. So I'd hear a mouse clanking around in there at about 5am, and we'd get up at 7am to empty it, and he'd be gone. Now I have one of the traps in the breezeway cupboard next to two snap traps. I haven't caught a mouse in the humane trap for over a month, but I know they're in there because I get them in the snap traps at least two a week. And as far as the traps in the coop... the dust gets in the mechanisms and keeps them from closing smoothly. So mice get in and get right back out.

And those cheap snappy traps kill them instantly. Snap. Dead mouse that got one tasty lick of peanut butter. Call my husband to empty the trap, set it again... within a day or so there's another snap, and another instantly killed mouse.

If you decide to do the snappy traps, you could take a terracotta flower pot and use a Dremel to carve out a mouse-sized hole, and put the snap trap in there on a piece of wood. If the flower pot was heavy enough, the chickens couldn't overturn it.

I used to have more sympathy toward the little varmints, until I was cleaning mouse poop out of cupboards that contained food items or kitchen appliances. Yeah, that's all I need. "Sorry, doctor, I don't know HOW my kids got hanta virus!!!"

Yep - they still haven't built a better mouse trap! I use the snap traps and they are quite effective. I also use peanut butter - they can't resist it!

Yeah I'm afraid I was thinking the same thing about the "humane" traps. Being kept trapped for even just a few hours, especially without water would panic me for sure. I'd rather die quickly! That's why if anyone ever tried to force me into their car at gun point I'd just say shoot me cause I aint' getting in that car! Seriously! Death is easy and the idea of dying doesn't bother me at all. It's the idea of suffering before I die that freaks me out!

Exactly! Shoot me!

Looking for SQ mille fleur D'uccle chicks, if anyone by any kind of awesome coincidence has them, or knows someone who could sell them to me. If they sell Silkies too, awesome, cause I want one hen. If not, that's OK too. They also need to be sexed. Thanks!
P.S. Will be at Stockton show coming up! If anyone could sell me chicks there.
Thanks again!

I couldn't get any chicks there. GRRRRRR! If anyone has them now, the offer still stands. Don't even need to be sexed, I'm pretty desperate. I need them in Spring, at the latest!
Thanks,
Eggxelent

There you go again Kim! Showing how much we think alike. You're not the first person I've met that thinks like I do but you are the first person I've met to freely admit it!

I don't know what it is exactly that you guys aren't understanding about me not killing the mice.
No we know it's not in you Hon! We just can't resist putting our 2 cents worth in. I kinda like the differing opinions! This thread has been lagging a bit lately. Not sure why I found a discussion of rodent infestations so interesting... LOL

I don't know of anyone but I'll keep my eyes open.

If you're in Reno and you want full-grown chickens, I have a friend whose brother needs to get rid of about 10 hens very soon.

Lol yeah I just realized I fell into that too! I guess I figured I needed to jump out of my crazy schedule and get on a soapbox about mousetraps!

Hi there! This is my very first posting here and I'm very excited to have found you all! We're in Tonopah, NV (about 1/2 way between Vegas & Reno). We have 16 hens and 1 Roo in our backyard chicken "condo" (as the neighbors call it). We're looking to add about 4 more started pullets and would rather get them from Nevada rather than fly them in from an outside hatchery. Can any of you direct me to a Nevada Hatchery or such? We're looking to get 4 started pullets out of this list, if possible: Delaware, Buff Orpington, Salmon Favorelle, Buff Brahma, Gold Lace Wyandotte, Columbian Wyandotte, Red Blue laced Wyandotte.... or ANY OTHER SUGGESTIONS of Great layers - that are warm/cold hardy?

We already have: White Orpingtons, Plymouth barred rocks, EEs, Australorps, RIRs, an AWESOME "barnyard" Roo that's prob. RIR/Favorelle mix - and we'd like to add different breeds this time - no bantams, tho.

Thanks for your consideration and time in answering!
