Hello all! I'm in Sparks, just joined BYC and introduced myself in the new members forum. Is anyone here familiar with the Sparks ordinances on chicken keeping? Thanks!

Welcome cluckless and everyone else who has joined us! It very nice to see others here too. Please always speak up, believe me, we are always reading what is posted on here and answer when we can help and such.

Missy, I'm so glad things are looking up now. This actually sounds like a hawk or cat attack instead of a raccoon attack. I do get a 30 minute warning because of the route the raccoons take to get into my backyard. They are noisy too. Hawks and cats are not noisy critters when they attack.

Well, let me say I've been through the ringer this past month. I've never had issues with chicken mites inside my house before. Those little buggers are noseums but you sure can feel them crawl all over you and bite you. You only can see the ones that draw blood and then you can pick them off of you. I didn't have a clue what to do. I called an exterminator and they couldn't see anything. I called UNR and they couldn't help but he gave me the phone number to Washoe County and the State of Nevada. Washoe County couldn't help me so I called the State, Jeff Knight was very nice. Every where I read told me I had to get rid of the source, well the source is my flock so I thought and it broke my heart so bad all I could do was cry for days on end. Now at the State, Jeff Knight, the Entomologist, just calmly said treat the chickens, spray the coop and the mites will die inside your house in 35 days. I collected the bugs I pulled off of me and used a lint roller on my bed where they were attacking me and drove it over to him. I should be getting a call this week to find out what exactly is attacking me. The good news out of this is the bugs have all died inside my house. The flock is happy again but I still need to conquer the coop but at least I'm somewhere instead of crying. My work has offered me part time if I want it so I can be home more often. I've decided to take the part time job instead of full time. Missy, thank you so much for seriously thinking of coming over to help me clean everything up but then not coming over so you wouldn't end up taking them home. I can still use help if you guys can come over since the bugs are all dead to finish this huge job. At least we don't need to do any wall washing now.

I ended up with roundworms from when Leroy bit the top of my foot a while back, at least we believe that's where they came from, so no more wearing flip flops and I'm now taking albendazole twice a day. It's the same stuff we give chickens and ducks. I was on stromectol its the human pill for Ivermectin, first for the biting bugs and the other for the worms. It's funny how I'm taking what I give my chickens for their worms and parasites.

Oh and a little something I learned today. I learned how to check the oil and put a quart in my truck. For me it was one of my biggest accomplishment I've done in a very long time. John will be out of town for about 5 more weeks and I have tons to do.

Thanks for listening and Good Night.

Hey, I just joined BYC a few days ago and today found the Nv. forum.
I'm in Silver Springs (yeah, I know...I'm sorry too)

Anyway, happy to be on this site!
I have been busy with family, so I haven't been on in a few days. When I did check in I saw your post. What is wrong with Silver Springs...why do you think you have to apologize for us. We have lived out here for 15 years and love it very much. We have lots of friends that have been out here about as long as we have and all love it. We live out by the lake and have 5 acres of heaven. If you don't like it or have to apologize for it....why did you move here.

Well Welcome to BYC and the Nevadans anyway. You will find we are all like a little family here. Hope you enjoy us.

Thanks Sunny for the advice on what I should do with my Barred Rocks....I think it would be to hard for me. My husband is so frustrated that I think he could almost cull them. I know a person out here that takes chickens if you can't keep them anymore. If I do anything I would give them to them...at least I won't see what they do with them. I have also noticed if I put things in their run for them to do they forget about pecking. I am going to clean my yard from the winter, so I will throw things in their run and let them play. I put a few things the other day and it worked....so here goes my yard clippings.

TheNewMrsEvans, you wouldn't happen to be the Hilary that sold a redhead three Ameracauna chicks at 1Stop feed a few weeks ago?

If so, they are doing lovely! The have adopted my three month old barred rock as their 'mommy,' and she has been sitting on them and generally becoming a fantastic mama hen.

Where are the pics?
Here is a few...my phones camera is not that good though.

My horse likes to watch them...and yes this one part of the fence isn't very adequate, we fixed it... (all other 3 sides of the fence are 6 feet+ tall)

The girls enjoying a bowl of oatmeal!

I am surprised, when I was researching bantams I didn't think they laid so many eggs. I have 6, and I usually get at least 4 a day.

BlueEyedDevil, great pics!

Sheryl, we can probably do that soon. This weekend is totally planned out, but maybe next weekend I can bring the family over. I'm glad things are turning around over there!

Well, thinks have improved on the chicken front. Closet Chicken (Strip) is doing better. I'm going to keep her in the closet for one more day, then put her out tomorrow. The wound is still closed up, but I don't want her or another chicken to peck it open. She's getting a little unhappy in that closet. Tapas the blue Andalusian has been located. After losing her for a second night, we figured she had gone broody somewhere in the yard. Today we found her beneath the shed, on top of 10 unfertilized eggs. She wouldn't let us bring her out, so when she came out to eat we nabbed her and clipped her wings. The shed is on the other side of the garden fence, so wing clipping should solve that problem plus the issue of chickens digging at my garlic. Sweet with the prolapsed vent isn't better, but she seems to be passing eggs and poop. We're not too optimistic, though. We're being realistic that this will probably happen again if it gets fixed, and we don't want her to get all infected and miserable, so we're facing whether to donate her to my herpetologist friend or not. The 3 babies are doing great. Jerk is such an amazing mom, how could she not? Plus, we have a lineup for cycling out (donating to my friend.) The first two are the noisiest. One is younger than a year, but she's also the most disruptive, very antisocial, and not that valuable as far as egg production.
