Nevadans?

Hmmm. Well golly, if anyone is gonna go out into the boonies to get hay, would you be interested in getting a couple extra bales for me? I'll pay extra what you payed for it and I can pick it up from the Reno area. .... Just THROWING that out there...

Just to put it out there, I use straw in the coop/barn/20x12 stall the girls are in. I got this off the BYC on another thread. They clean it out when it needs it and put it in the compost. It works great for me, but I don't know what rain is any more. the last time we got any it was just enough to make a mess. Plus the coop dose not get wet. I would love to cover the rest of this "soil" with any thing! That reminds me I have the H20 on in the pasture! It's been on all day:rolleyes:

Sunny, Embrace the Gift! It is among that which makes you unique.....and, hopefully, keeps your checkbook orderly! My mother, for the life of her, cannot get the numbers thing (she used to be a school teacher!) and exercises "new math" when it comes to balancing her checkbook, ergo I'm forever doing monthly maintenance/upkeep on her finances. I've always enjoyed math... Numbers, bless them, don't lie! I bet you're fairly organized, too; right? Are you the one they come to when they cannot find something?

As a kid when other girls were involved with Barbies or Breyer horse models I had -- I cannot remember the name now -- little motorized cars that came with oodles of grey road sections and you could design roadways, race courses, etc. I would spend hours configuring the stuff all over the house. Why I never ended up in CalTrans I don't know. Instead I opted for veterinary school, but realized it wasn't for me and so after some introspection switched over to a law-related field. I am a court reporter, one of those people with the little disco typewriters who takes down legal proceedings and produces transcripts. Of course, I didn't let the vet stuff go to waste and had a great run with a stud farm, pygmy goat midwifery and hobby ranch....hence all the references to raising veggies and poultry projects.

If you haven't seen the movie yet, by all means rent "Temple Grandin." It was an HBO special and swept the Emmy Awards. I thought it was wonderful, especially with the thought processes. It gave a lot of insight to many things, but especially to application and utility.

Never heard of it. I have to get it now though, since you and Eglyntine have recomended it so highly! And, yes, I am the one everyone in the family goes to when they can't find things etc, etc, etc... Are you sure this is a good thing?

Shanyalv so sorry to hear of your loss! Keep the new babies away from the rest of the flock, when they hatch, til you're sure it isn't contagious!

Thanks Genny! It's good to be up and about more and more! I haven't had a chance to candle the eggs yet but I know a couple of them feel lighter than they should (the pullet that didn't stay consistent). I haven't pulled them though and won't til I get a chance to candle them.

Hi to everybody else! I love to see all the variety of topics we cover here! You all are a blast (that could be the pain pills talking though).

I need to calculate what we need to house by spring so DH and I can get started on another coop (don't worry I'm just designing it, DH does all the heavy stuff these days).

I know I had a couple of offers for some more marans that we can pick up next spring. Holly, I believe, had a few but wasn't sure how many chicks she could commit to and ke_ben used to have a bunch but wasn't sure if he could swing any this coming spring. Am I remembering correctly? Anybody else down south have any marans chicks they might be willing to sell come spring? I'm only interested in the real dark egg laying lines. Don't care so much about SQ.
I only plan on breeding the ameraucanas for now and I can get everything else I need for egg production from Genny or others up here but I really want the Blue Wheaton Marans or would consider the BCMs or Cuckoos. Anyone?

That's what I want too.

I was thinking my one Roo would or could be a Blue Wheaton Maran!

Great conversations about hay, straw, and such!

Hmmmm - numbers - I count lots of things - I just thought it was a little OCD! Glad to hear there are others like me!

Sunny - glad to hear you up and about and feeling better - don't over do it - alot of people post op start to feel better and then over do it. If your body says rest - then take a rest - it needs time to heal...

Genny - no eggs yet.. Sassy still looks close. Her comb and wattles are much bigger and red. Cabo (the really dark OpxDel) is getting her wattles and they are slightly pink. Chucklina (the other OpxDel that has some of the gold/brown on her chest not as much as Sassy) is just starting to sprout her wattles. All of the other OpxEEs are looking the same - some pink on the faces and not much going on in the comb and wattle areas. None of them are doing an egg squat at all - in fact if I reach down to touch them they scatter. I check the nest boxes, the corners of the coop, under the coop, under the lattice and still nothing! They do go into the coop more frequently and they have started to really eat more pellets. The oyster shell is still untouched. My neighbor got her hens 3 weeks ago and whispered in their ears last night and was rewarded with 2 perfect brown eggs! But her hens are about 23 weeks now (2 BO, 1 BR). I guess it will happen, when it happens!

I wish I could get one more hen - I would love to have a BCM for the dark chocolate eggs! But the dh says "no more chickens!" I only have 6 - doesn't he understand chicken math?!?

I have a great hay guy - his name is Daniel Shokoofi, off 395 Lemon valley-ish area - he has ads on craigslist - High Sierra hay. He will sell you loose bagged hay for your birds. The alfalfa is fantastic! I have his number but so not want to post it here - pm me for it if you want.

When I was young I would count the pages in the phone book. The rest of the family thought that was odd. I didn't know there were more of us out there. I wonder if that behavior and chicken obsession are somehow related?

I have seen his ad on Craig's, does he charge less for loose bagged alfalfa? Cause his bale prices are pretty high $8.90 to $10.25 depending on the grade of Alfalfa. Of course that is his "You pick it up price", he does not have his delivery fee listed in his ad.

Yes his bagged hay is less. His alfalfa is a grade better than I have found in the feed stores - more leaf, less/smaller bloom (larger the bloom the less nutrition in the hay) - really nice stuff. Last I knew, his delivery was free - if you bought a ton.

Sunny - I have more eggs in the bator - set yesterday, if you decide you want to give her some more.
