I wish they did these things on Sundays, all of my Saturdays are always taken and it is very rare that I am able to do anything outside of family get togethers on Saturdays. Which I am not complaining about the family part, I just wish there were more things on Sundays. It must be a West Coast thing.
I am so elated today. ALL of my girls and guys spent their first official night in the chicken coop last night. The coldest it got inside was 50 degrees compared to the 10 it was outside. They were upset about the "new" change at first but it did not take long for them to settle right in. I wanted to take a bunch of pictures of the before and after but my children have hauled my camera off somewhere and I cannot find the darn thing.
The only birds in the house at the moment are the BO's, SLW, and RIR second batch of chicks that are only 2 weeks old and way too young to be out in 50 degree temps. We picked up these
Zoo Med Repticare Ceramic Infrared Heat Emitters lights from
Petco yesterday and we are going to hook them up in the baby brooder and see how they do tonight. They do not put off any light but they put off heat and with the ceramic coating they are more efficient and durable than the regular heat lamps. Plus you do not have to worry about messing with roosting patterns, etc.
I put the feed and water in the chicken coop last night with the girls and the water did not freeze at all and I did not have to fill up the feed this morning. There was still a ton of feed in the feeders so mystery solved. It was definitely the wild quail and doves eating me out of house and home. Speaking of which, I have a dove in my house somewhere. I woke up yesterday morning to my oldest son telling me there was a bird in the house. I figured he had brought in another chicken in the house but instead I walk out into the livingroom and the dogs have a dove trapped up on a book shelf. I tried to catch her a couple of times but I was doing more harm to her trying to catch her so I figured I would give her a break until my DH got home and after the boys and the dogs were in bed. Well by the time he got home she had disappeared so I figured she must have figured out a way back outside. Then 3am hit and I was woke up out of a dead sleep by all this banging in my closet. I had spent the whole evening watching TAPS on SyFY so of course I was freaked out and then I remembered the dove. So this morning I went closet searching and could not find her. I am going to have to do major spring cleaning just to find this dove. *LOL*
UPDATE: While I was typing this out I heard a bunch of ruckus behind the curtain in one of our hydro gardens and when I went to see what it was VIOLA I found, caught and released the dove back to the wild. YAY!
