Nevadans?

I don't think any of your proposed breeds will lay like the breeds you currently have. My delawares from Privett Hatchery were very friendly birds but the eggs were small and not frequent enough for our egg customers. The EE's are fun, for the colored eggs, but we found they don't lay at all for us from the end of Nov until about mid-Feb. I keep one in the flock just for the colored egg. But the pullet chick I bought that was hatched in May 2010 has yet to lay an egg, green or brown. We have a JG, and she's a sweety, but also hatched March 2010 and has not layed an egg yet. The best egglayers we have are ISA browns from Townline Hatchery in MI. They lay very consistently and the eggs are huge. They also started laying at 18 weeks. However, I think they may burn out sooner than other breeds.

ISA Brown... same as my Cinnamon Queen Chloe who passed away in June. I don't ever want another Cinnamon Queen. She was the only one i ever had and will have

But the Jersey still hasnt laid an egg? it seems like at 9 months it would be laying. Maybe i wont get that, but i want the EE for colored eggs, even if they don't lay every day, and I want the Polish since people say they are nice, and i love the way they look lol. What colors do your Delawares lay?

My best layers are the Red Sex Links - some people call them Red Stars. They started laying the earliest, they lay the most, and they lay the largest eggs. They also have great personalities - they come right up to me and let me pet them, etc. The others are all way more skittish. I'll definitely be getting more! Unfortunately, I got them from a feed store in Fallon and I have no idea where they got them.

How fun! On the mareks vaccine, they recommend it if you are in an area that has other flocks close by. Mareks can travel for blocks on the wind and it can devastate a flock. I have no other flocks close by so don't stress about it but if you are not sure it is a good idea to get it. Easy to say I've never had a problem but that won't help you any if it does hit your flock.

Jersey giants are known for being huge feeders and don't produce well. They are not cost effective at all but some folks still like them for the novelty. I wouldn't have them though. My feed bill is already high enough.

I've never had Australorps but I've had red and gold sex links. Great layers and even lay through the winter for me. So do my orpingtons.

Can't wait to see pics of them!

Here is what i've summed up my list to. Please tell me what you like, dislike, or any ideas

Australorp, Easter Egger, Light Brahma, Deleware, White Crested Blue Polish, Buff Laced Polish, and maybe Salmon Faverolles.
If i decide not to get the Faverolles, I will get another EE cuz i want the Green Eggs!

Loved, loved, LOVED my coop of Cinnamon Queens when I had them. Six laydies and we were never out of larage-to-jumbo eggs....We ate A LOT of angel food cake. They often were let loose on the ranch and would wander off to the horse pastures (we never had flies, btw, when the chickens free-ranged) and would come back when called. Not so compliant was the leghorn or lakenvelder...would have to wait until sunset when they rehomed themselves. The sex-links always looked healthy, too. The white egg layers just seemed skittish and thrifty.

The JG flock while magnificent to look at ended up not being very cost-efficient. However, talk about Thunder Chickens on the table! I gave a dressed one to my sister who promptly wanted to know how you cook a 12-lb chicken. (Answer: "Like a turkey") The eggs weren't very big, but maybe I just didn't give them enough of a chance to get it in gear.

Delawares are sweet, especially if handled lots as chicks. A friend of mine has Australorps and swears they're the greatest, although I personally like a bit more feather color variety in a flock. The Polish I had laid kind of small eggs (well, compared to CQ's), but they were very easy to catch.

Hopefully, Jeepers, you're looking for more than just one kind as variety is the spice of life. New chicks...How exciting! Enjoy!

. I've already decided that we probobly won't keep him. Nikki had rescued him about a month ago from cl but he was causing problems with the bigger roosters ( you oughtta see 'er big roo- he's gorgeous!!!!!) well the second I brought this guy home he tried to fight Lucy and got his butt handed to him. (he's a silkie.. A very "macho" one at that...) he is super loud too... I could probobly et the neighbors to deal with it if he was nice to my girls. Well see how it's going by next week. I think he might be too small to mate with them anyways and I don't see the point of feeding another mouth if I can't get anyhing out of it. Ah well it was nice of Nikki to think of me. He's really nice and good with people. He hangs out in my dining room and doesn't move a muscle. Just perches there and yawns... So content

Meet the "CHICKEN STEAMER":

For those who don't know the purpose - you put water in it and set it on the stove and it adds humidity to the room. Click here for details.
