Yeppers, some years are like that.....

At least they're chickens. I had one year at the ranch where I really wanted to increase my breeding flock of pygmy goats. Out of 52 kids that hit the ground -- drumroll, please -- only 4 were does! Argh, Argh and double-Argh!

There were A LOT of 4-H giveaways that year......

I feel your pain.... Keep trying!

Howdy to all of the new folks! And to all of the regulars as well.

We have been super busy with yardwork, getting the garden ready for planting and butchering roosters. I only have 3 left to do and it cannot happen fast enough. These RIR roosters are mean as snakes. They killed one of my white leghorn hens, literally ripped her back off of the bone. I figured if I lowered the population they would calm down but they have just got more vicious. With the weather the way it's been we had to postpone finishing off the last 3 roos but one way or another they are going to be gone this weekend. I do not care if I have to stand out in the worst weather I am not going to lose one more hen or one of my good roosters to them. They started picking on Oscar's (my BA rooster) tail feathers yesterday.

I have 12 more eggs on set right now. One of my BO hens went uber broody two weeks ago so I decided to take advantage of it. We need to fill up the freezer for the winter and crossbreeds are definitely useful for that.

We have not been able to get the new pens setup yet but hopefully in the next couple of weeks we will be able to get it done and I can start hatching out purebreds. I have a few requests already for polish and BO chicks, now if the wind and rain will let up long enough for us to get the pens up I can get to work on that.

Nice turkeys btw, I was thinking of picking up a couple of them myself but until I get the new house up and running I cannot really add turkeys or any other birds to the mix.

Great pictures Sunny, makes me homesick for lush green surroundings that is for sure. I am glad you all had a wonderful time.

Well I am off for now, I hope all is going well with everyone else.

OK, Kim can't take the BCMs after all.
Anybody want to buy a gorgeous trio of FBCMs for a really good price? There's a catch to the good price though, I want a couple dozen fertile eggs a year for hatching. I am totally addicted to these marans' eggs! They are seriously the best I've ever eaten.

I know I could sell them online very easily but I'm selfish and I want to strike a deal that keeps me in marans' eggs.

Eglyntine you are doing the right thing! I won't have a mean rooster about. I hear folks talking about their mean roos and I just don't get it! Course I don't show my birds or get quite as attached to them as some do (you won't see me buying chicken diapers so they can roam the house). I think it's great that some folks have such a huge capacity for love that they will deal with an honery roo but I'll never be one of those folks.

I never notice any poo smell from my chickens. It dries out too quickly. I'm using the deep litter method with straw hay in my coops, and I clean them out twice a year. I feed my chickens alfalfa at least once a week, and they eat everything but the stems, which they spread around the run on their own. That keeps the poo in the runs from getting smelly and also makes it easier to walk around in there without, er, issues!
