Oh my gosh Sunny! So was it a growl from the mountain lion you heard then? You were lucky it warned you first, they don't usually warn but attack first around here so yeah, you were lucky if that's what you heard and I think it was!

No more going out there without being armed now even in the daytime you know. We had a bobcat at work who had kits this year and she raised them on our property. We left her alone so she could. She had 2 kits. It was actually funny when they were first noticed by our outside maintenance team who was looking at the new pretty little kittens playing in the fruit trees we have on the property and then they noticed mama and boy did they bolt out of there fast. I think Jerry had to change his pants after that one.

It was the bobcat that was killing the chickens out in Verdi this Summer. One of them even chased my friends cat into the house all the way to her daughter's bedroom where my friend and her daughter were sitting on the bed looking through magazines.

Yes I think I startled him but it is unusual that he would make any noise. He should have just moved away from me. Not sure it's a good sign that he didn't right away. I'm betting that he felt trapped since he was inside the run. There is no gate right now and wandering in was probably easier than finding his way out. The dogs were barking like crazy too but silly me thought they were upset when they heard me leaving.

Wow, that's something I forget about living in the city. We had them go through our property all the time in Idaho. In the middle of the night we'd hear the horses screaming, and the dogs barking. They always passed right through, though. Never hurt any of our animals, and we had chickens, rabbits, sheep, and horses. It was usually smaller animals like raccoons that did the damage.

I worked for the forest service in my late teens, and we'd be hiking in the middle of the mountains and come across cougars all the time. We were warned about those, but they were nothing compared to coming across a female moose. Cougars run away if you make loud noises. Moose attack.

Sunny, that is horrible! Must have stood the hair on the back of your neck, straight up! Glad you were able to get back in the house. Hope he doesn't get any chicken and moves on looking for easier food.

Yes Missy it is still unusual for a mountain lion to attack humans although attacks have risen quite a bit in the last 20 years. I have been aound them my whole life but this is the first time I've heard one growl! It is uncharacteristic for them to do that. More normal to move away. I have seen a ton of tracks in the yard though from night time visitors including a bunch of deer tracks which are one of a cougar's favorite prey. Well it could be antelope tracks. Equally tasty, I'm sure.

The hour before dawn and the hour after dusk are their most active times for hunting and, of course, that's when I was leaving. You'd think we humans would be smart enough to use our knowledge to avoid them... Habitat is also getting scarcer for them as their numbers are increasing and we move into their territory. Coyotes are even attacking humans these days (still rare to attack an adult but it is happening) but there's only been one reported human death from a coyote. I would definitely fear a moose more than any critter we get around here though. Luckily we're safe from moose here.

Yes Seth that's what I said was the main reason I wanted a stall at a farmer's market, to sell my eggs. It would take a lot of eggs to keep a stand going at the farmer's market though plus you would get some people freaking cause that's how folks are (even though none of the tainted eggs in the past few years ever came from a small private flock). I don't believe any one else mentioned wanting to share a stall though.

And no worries on the marans. You can let me know later if you decide different. I think the marans would be harder to show anyway for 4H. They are a pretty heavy breed and ameraucanas are a lighter weight bird. Easy to hold for a long time. Plus Candy's ameraucanas are super friendly and mellow. Start handling them when they are still chicks so they are used to you.

No it's funny Pam. The only thing that makes the hair on my neck stand up is what I can't explain. If I know what it is it just doesn't get much of a reaction from me, well til later any way. My Dad says I'm like him that way. We act first and react emotionally later which is good when dealing with an emergency but not so great for most other things.

I'm the same way though Sunny. My oldest son broke his femur riding his bike home from school and I didn't even flinch the first day. I was so calm at the hospital talking to my dad and other family members. My dad asked why are you so calm and I said I have to be or I'll start screaming. He was in a body cast for 2 months. We wouldn't wish that on anyone ever.

Just remember if you see it again do not ever turn your back on it or run from it. You must keep looking at their eyes and step backwards slowly. There was a woman who was jogging in the foothills on the West side of the Sierra's and the Mt. Lion killed her and buried her. The attacks are happening more than ever but there have only been a few that have been wounded or killed in the last several years. Let's not have you on the short list though Sunny, I don't think it would be fun.

I go to the farmer's market all of the time when it's open on California Ave. every Saturdays. There is a person who sells their eggs there and they charge $5 per dozen. You must get a permit to sell there from the city. There are procedures already set up we could look into them. I looked up the person who was in charge last year to see if I could sell my eggs there but I don't get enough eggs to sell. The people who do sell their eggs there clean theirs before they sell them. They post the dates from when to when they were layed and they charge .50 for each egg carton they supply to you on top of the $5 per dozen. There was several people who would ask them if they had pullet eggs to buy and they would always have them too, I didn't get the prices on those though.

I'm thinking we would need several hundred eggs to do this though and they would need to be layed in-between the days when the market isn't going. I know they didn't have duck eggs and I would love to sell my duck eggs there too. Duck eggs go for $8 per dozen I figure.

Not sure if we can really do this but I would like to try to.
