oh man i would love to buy some fresh bread off of you. Mark hates regular bread so he always buys that potato bread or 12 grain stuff and i hate it. I really think it is actually very gross. I would honestly rather eat 98 cent white or wheat loaf. I love homemade bread though, love love love it! My step-mom used to make such good fresh bread, but she isnt my step mom anymore and lives halfway across the country. I love my real mom to peices but she couldnt cook her way out of a paper baggie. :(

Aubrey those are so cute!!! I love the fluffy ones.

Silkies are the bomb.

Ron, thats what I'm doing through US Bank. I've got a visa with a 300$ max, which is good I guess, but I just wish the process were faster. Thanks though. :]

Hey Kentdalimp!! It's okay, I spend most my forum time lurking too. Glad you joined us.

The next time I make a batch, I'll let you know. It's not like you don't come into my area on a regular basis.

I used to make it every two weeks, but I've been trying to eat less gluten so I haven't made it as much. I usually make enough to fill an oven, then wrap up the extras and freeze them.

Lol my mom couldn't cook, either. We raised, grew, or hunted about 90% of our food, but when it came to cooking it... well, we got by. That's about it. And we never did anything wilder than farm food... our idea of international was buying a box of taco shells. I've become a huge foodie since I left home.

My family can't cook either but John's family has the best recipes around. Most of them are in Nonni's head though so I get to learn how she does it and then I do it.

I love cooking everything from scratch and fresh. This last Summer I was able to put away so much food. We are still using them up. I was able to can over 50 quarts of tomatoes plus I put some in the freezers and we had over 100 pole bean plants, we got the seeds from John's Great-Uncle, he's been planting these seeds for more than 50 years. We have over 50 pounds of beans in the freezer. Nonni said she if ever saw another bean again she would faint. So we let the others dry on the vines and I make soup with those.

This year I'm planting a bunch more carrots, it felt like we didn't have enough. Nonni says carrots can stay in the ground all Winter long and you pull out what you want when you want it and they won't freeze as long as you put straw over them. I'm going to try it this Summer.

My favorite crop we have is the Cardone, it's an Italian artichoke but a bit different. You can google it and see what I mean. We love it. I'll have seeds this year so if anyone wants to cultivate just let me know and I'll teach you.

I'd be willing to wait if that would be the best possible choice for the silkies. Right now we're ordering chickens from mypetchicken.com(not any silkies yet), but if we did order silkies the earliest they would get here is at the end of april, and I was thinking about waiting until the summer time so I could put more time into them when their chicks and their first couple of months. When you have someone hatch them for you, are you supposed to keep all the birds? Or is their some kind of deal worked out where they'll keep some/give some away. Because we can only have about 2, and no roosters because we're in a residential zone. Thanks for you help!
Quinnie, if you just can't wait, you could order from Ideal (www.ideal-poultry.com) BUT:
1) the order minimum is $25
2) as we've all recently learned, their bantams tend to run strong with roosters
3) they're not the best quality.

I don't know how My Pet Chicken is, but you can order as few as 3 chicks through them, and they sex the silkies. (www.mypetchicken.com) I browsed their site for awhile, but the shipping was higher than Ideal so I went with the lower price. You would probably be paying around $50 to get a couple, after shipping.

The best bet for good birds, though, is to get hatching eggs from a breeder and have someone hatch them for you.

And as the hot summers, if you're going to keep them indoors you've totally avoided that problem.

The general consensus in cities is roosters are bad. But you can advertise free roosters on Craigslist and they get snatched up... my silkie roosters found a home within 4 hours. When someone hatches for you, I would expect to be responsible for all that hatch unless the person hatching wants to keep some. So double what you want, because of the 50% rooster/hen ratio, and have a plan for the extras.

mypetchicken.com is also Murray McMurray hatchery, they set up mypetchicken for people who could not do the minimum ordering. You may want to check out your feed stores there as well, you might be able to order silkies through them and perhaps they won't have a minimum.
