Nevadans?

Hey, I got a BYC thread notification finally!!! Hope this keeps up. It's much easier to click on that and get to the right spot.

Jose and the kids bought me a pot of flowering pink daisy like flowers. Very pretty and I like getting a plant so it will really last. I got an egg this morning. Hopefully there will be more today. My chickens were also not so sure about going out of the coop this morning. So far they've just stuck a foot out on the ramp and then went back in. They liked the snow the other day but that was quite a bit less.

well valentines days is sad for me my grandpa died today11 years ago and today my 1.5 year old cousin was diegnosed with autism

I hope something comes along for you that will make a happy memory for valentine's day.

Hope you find someone to go in on the SQ chickens. I have quite a few chicks coming already.

I don't show my birds so I don't usually pay the extra for show quality unless it's a breed I'm just dying to get or, like the marans, you pretty much have to cause you get lousy egg color otherwise. I'm already over my budget for birds as it is. Hope you get some good chickies though.

There you are Aubrey! How's your friend doing? I guess you don't want to pick up the bed today. The roads aren't plowed up here yet.

Love the pics of the chickens out in the snow Missy. So cute! Mine won't come out. Samson wanted to play ball this morning but kept losing the ball in the snow. He'd go to grab it and it would scoot away from him, under the snow, so he would use his nose like a snow shovel, find it again and repeat the whole process over and over. I wish I'd had a camcorder with me. It was hilarious!!!

Seth the marans girl I talked about selling to you hasn't developed the "bay" colored eye yet. Her eyes are still yellow which is a DQ. Sorry she is so pretty otherwise and may just be a late bloomer but as of right now she is not SQ because of the eye color.

Also scoured the girls combs hoping to see even a hint or red creeping into them but nothing yet. Looks like I have a while longer til I get eggs but that is healthier for them. I've been reading that early egg laying often means a shorter life span. Though you hear of exceptions all the time, I've decided to consider it a good thing that they aren't anywhere close yet.

I'm still jealous Elizabeth! Sounds like you have a nice start on a great laying flock! Hope those notifications keep coming. I get one out of every 10 or so. And usually a thread I don't care much about.

I'm glued to the bator today. Temps are holding perfectly. My fan broke yesterday so I have just taped a little personal fan in there for now. Ran all over town yesterday trying to find one but no luck so I had to order one. The little one seems to be doing the job though!

I have several thermometers in there and no obvious hot spots.

Sunny, when the girls start laying... if you need to find homes for any of them that don't quite give you the color you want... I'd just like a girl that lays darker than the welsummer I have coming. So I'd love to buy/adopt if and when you have someone you need to rehome.

well, a few BO's ventured out in the snow for awhile but now they're back inside. I'm working at home today. Would it be weird to take my laptop out and work in the coop? Probably a bad idea.

ya i was fine until my little cousiun.

so for my degree in chicken math at BYC university will you help me?
i am looking at a 5x6 coop with three nest boxs that stick out how many chickens can i have? Bantum standard mainly outside mainly inside all thes amounts please

Hi Seth,

Okay, if you keep them mainly inside and their only bantams then you should be okay 20 without any issues. According to the BYC and other websites you can get away with 30 inside all of the time but I myself would not push it. If they are mainly outside then you can do the 30.

When are you putting the eggs in? My incubator went to 100 degrees this morning and the humidity sure was up too. It's back to normal again though, I guess the storm did it.

Knowing me I would if I could sit in my chickens coop.

The pullets sure was curious with the snow but no one went out in it, instead they were all lined up in the coop waiting to lay their eggs. Some of them even doubled up in the nesting boxes. We don't get that very often but it does happen.

Okay. I'll go add you to the list right now.

You also Elizabeth. Thanks for the good hatching vibes!

This hatch is a mixed hatch. Mostly Yokohamas. I always get so excited when I hatch, I'm trying to not get carried away this time. And no it's not weird at all, it's just fine to take the lap top into the coop!

Hey I'm getting my notifications again too!!!

I put the eggs in last night Sheryl. The bator had been running for 3 days and everything was fine til the fan went out and that just caused a few hot spots. The mini fan took care of that problem. Don't laugh but it's in the bedroom next to my bed. I sleep better when I can keep an eye on the temps just in case. And 100 degrees is fine. If it gets to 104 for even a few seconds you would be in trouble though. Mine is hovering right between 99 and 100 but I don't stress about a few 10ths of a degree.

I don't feel so bad now. We stopped by a friend's on Christmas Day to deliver them a basket of goodies, and the mom commented, "Yeah, we're really casual here," as she let her 2-year-old sit on the table.

I just replied sheepishly, "Um... I currently have chickens sitting on my table."

"Thawing out for dinner?"

"No, they're alive."

That was when I had Nugget and Tender, and their brooder sat on the dining table because I was dogsitting two schnauzers who thought they looked very tasty.
