Nevadans?

UNR's co-op extension says last frost isn't until the 15th of May. So unless the plants are frost hardy I'd say not yet. i know how you feel though. With nice weather scheduled all this week I'm dying to put my garden in.

Oh man, waiting a month is gonna make me crazy! I have a few buckets started but I can always bring those in. Maybe Ill do a few more buckets to scratch my garden itch :/

Hello all,I have been MIA for a while trying to get ready for this new baby, but I have one quick question...CAN I PLANT A GARDEN YET? or should I wait for more crappy weather? I wont be starting from seeds,Ill be getting young plants....

Do not plant:
tomatoes
eggplants
peppers
corn
squash
cucumbers
melons
beans
not seeds OR plants UNLESS it's in containers that you're willing to lug in when the weather gets below 38 degrees.
Do not plant these in a permanent location until one frost-free week AFTER May 15th. The past two years, people planted on the 15th and it froze right after. They were looking at the date, not the weather forecast.

Do not plant basil, unless you're willing to lug it in when it's below 42 degrees. It'll die in cold weather that's a good 10 degrees above frost. That's why it goes black in your refrigerator, as well.

Maybe plant:
potatoes
(If it gets below freezing, the plant part will die back. But they might not come up until last frost anyway. Your gamble.)

Go ahead and plant:
lettuce
swiss chard
kale
peas, all kinds
broccoli
cauliflower
cabbage
onions
all herbs but basil
carrots, though they probably won't germinate for a few weeks anyway. That's just how they roll.

Good advice Missy!

Haha, yesterday I was looking at the weather report for this weekend and now I have to sit on my hands to stop myself from running outside to put my seedlings in the ground. They are taking over my whole dining room and are starting to overflow into the living room! It's going to be so nice it's hard to believe summer isn't just around the bend. But I know Mother Nature is just teasing us!

Hmmm. I wonder if anyone realizes I'm secretly going to turn the potluck into a gardening party.

I hope everyone elses day is going well. I'm suprisingly cheerful for not being able to see and being stuck in the house. Kind of hard not to be when there are blubirds and robbins singing outside.

Edited to add:

Better news! Now it will be a chick party. The Ameracuana chicks I ordered Sunny and several extras will be here tomorrow. YAY!

I'm trying really hard to be cheerful today. I went to take the little kids outside, and held each one up to my ear. Then I put every single on in the quarantine room for wheezing or clicking breath. There are 13 in there, all the remaining birds that I picked up from Candy. Considering they all had breathing noises, if a single one comes down with puffy face, they're all getting culled.

But the good news is that my seedlings are going well! I'm WAY behind as far as transplanting, and don't know how much I'll get done today because I have to disinfect the area where the kennel brooder was, plus take care of 4 clients and plant carrots in Garden #2. (I need to be out doing that right now, actually. I'm here on the internet.) 10 people have confirmed that they'd like to buy Sahara's seedlings for our fundraiser, so that gives me a lot of hope.

How is everyone else?

This morning when I was feeding and watering out in the coop, the little marans roo hopped out the door and into the big girls' section. he ran around in there and out into their part of the run. Of course as soon as I went into the run to get him, he ran back into the coop and some of the big girls started pecking at him. He got all frantic and tried to fly up the divider. Finally I caught him and put him back where he belongs. He is the most shy and skittish of all the chicks so it was challenging to catch him.

I also heard some attempted crowing from the lavender ameraucana. So, he will need to be out the door soon. It's probably pointless to ask on here but if you know someone that might be interested in a lovely cockerel, let me know. He's quite nice looking--about 9 weeks old.

I'm so sorry. It was sounding more positive for you yesterday. Keep focusing on what is going well, as hard as that may be. Hopefully the chicks will end up being ok.
