Hey, want to hear something funny? Last week, I laughed at my sister because she mis-identified the gender of her 2 pet rabbits and had them penned together. A day after realizing her mistake, she had a box of babies. Pretty much that same day, I walked out to witness some very dominant behavior in what I thought was the girl/girl cage. Well, today I checked the gender just to be sure... now that they are older, I realize I have 3 bucks and 1 doe, and they were caged in pairs. So Russ has an emergency project. A week from the "dominant behavior" scene... 3 weeks MAXIMUM to make a nesting environment.

Since I wanted 2 breeding does, I figure I'll take one of her babies as the 2nd doe (after positive gender identification) then slaughter this buck, and use one of the other bucks as breeding so I don't get the generations too close.

Hi everyone! I'm finally feeling much better. The fever is gone now.

Missy, great news on the chickens and no sign of anymore of that yucky stuff going on!

Sunny, thank you for getting the vaccine for everyone. I'm going to hold off though. I have ducklings hatching next week and weekend so there's no way I can meet up with anyone while that's going on.

Well, Leroy the Blue Laced Red Wyandotte of a rooster thought it would be funny to take on the hen Sylvia the Silver Laced Wyandotte. That boy raised his cackles and actually pecked her on her beak through the wire. She was so shocked but she did raise her cackles right away and lightly pecked him back. Boy did he run away fast. No harm was done except his ego. He hasn't approached the chickens since. We are going to keep though.

Elizabeth, I think the older chickens from Kirsten are actually Golden Laced Wyandottes. Lacey's red feather color is off from Leroy's and it actually looks more golden than red to me. Not sure what I would get from the 2 of them?

Oh and please take pictures of the get-together, I would love to see them.

I know Kirstie's BLRWs well and they are all Blue Laced Reds and great quality birds. In fact if you want to see the parents, she sold all of them to a BYCer and her website is Die Fly Ranch. It is way too early to predict color on the chicks. Here is a good example with one of my splash hens when she was young.

I thought this chick was SO ugly and wouldn't amount to much. See how orange she was, but in the next picture at 5 months the darker red and better lacing came in

Hard to believe it is the same bird isn't it? Wyandottes are slow to mature.

WOW that is a gorgeous bird! I would love to get my hands on a few of these thanks very much for posting pics!! Amazing, I have always liked Wyandottes, my kids sold all their Bantam show Wyandottes last year....

thanks for the background on Kirstie's birds. I have seen the Die Fly Ranch website so that's cool to know they were Kirstie's. One of the black/red cockerels was so ugly to start with--he was half bald on the back--but he is feathering in very nicely and his lacing in front is very nice. It is interesting to watch how they devleop. Your pullet is so gorgeous!

Thanks Elizabeth and Candy. I know the Wyandottes do feather differently, I was comparing the colors. Boy, what will these 2 look like at 5 months? I'll be posting pics quite often on here. Everyone is now outside and loving it too. I did spray the brooder with water today because they were so hot this afternoon.

I'm glad everyone enjoyed themselves. I hope there were pics taken but I also understand when they are not.

I did take photos, sheryl and will post them either later tonight or tomorrow. I got carsick on the way back from virginia city so i'm not quite up to getting the photos posted yet. I have had quite the month getting sick twice. I haven't been sick like that in quite a few years and haven't gotten carsick since I was a kid. Bit of a rough ride home.
