Nevadans?

cool photos, candy. fun to see the older pullets/cockerels.

sunny, i tried the food processor last night and i'm not sure I really got them small enough and i can see that could be quite a lot of work to keep that up. i will try watering some food down into a mash tonight.
I've seen some beautiful things done with tires and a little leftover paint. The kids would have so much fun slapping some extra paint on tires so you could plant them! My husband built me some planter boxes out of an old fence, and he let the neighbor kids come over and stick their hands in some nearly-expired house paint, then put their prints all over the planters. They're so cute!

Elizabeth, I don't know how fragile jaerhorns are, but about an hour ago I had an unfortunate accident with one of my silkies. I was holding a silkie and my cochin, showing my husband the difference in the two blue colors, when the silkie jumped off. It didn't drop more than 18 inches, but landed in just the right spot to kill it. I'm guessing it had to do with the vaulted skull. I feel horrible because it was such a senseless thing. This is the first "stupid" death we've had so far. After working so hard to save them from coryza, I lose one to falling on its head.

sorry to hear that, Missy. they are so squirmy! what a bummer. I haven't been letting my kids handle any chicks or chickens since the jaer died just in case there was any sickness involved and i think it's best to continue that policy for awhile. i haven't let them hold the chicks by themselves yet anyway just because it is so hard to not let them squirm out and jump. i hope your other chicks are doing ok and getting better. what a rough month, huh?

I'm sure I missed some other posts but I'll come back later. busy, busy times at work getting another grant proposal in.

Have I told you all how much I appreciate the fact that I do not see all the 6th grade drama on this thread that I see on so many threads?!! Not that we always agree, just that it never seems to come to the horrible meltdowns I see on so many threads! OK, rant over.

You know what works great is the 7 grain (do not get 10 grain it has soy) hot cereal I get at the health food store. It is finely ground and my chicks go nuts over it!

Here is a picture of it (10 grain but I don't feed that since I saw it has soy) so you can see the brand and what it looks like. Our health food store keeps it in the refrigerated section. I mix it with the Flockraiser for regular sized chicks. For bantam chicks I put the Flockraiser in a zip lock bag and pound it until it is fine. I also found that my chickens hate alfalfa pellets, and rabbit alfalfa has all those stems, so I discovered that the alfalfa tea at the health food store works out great and is only .20 cents per ounce. Not only do the adults like it mixed in their food, so do the chicks! I can't let my chickens free range because of predators so I like them to have the alfalfa.

Missy, I'm sorry you lost your silkie. I know you must feel horrible but please don't be blaming yourself, it was just a freaky accident.

Missy, I have your 2 girl ducks ready for you. I get off around 7 tonight or it might be much later. John's home today so we can arrange something to get them to you if you can't come get them? We are having a dickens trying to sex these ducklings this time but we now have it straighten out.

Candy, great pics of the wheatons. Do you have any picks of your rooster that is the father of my little rooster? I'll be taking more pics of the little ones and I'll post them on here.

I have pics of the ducklings with their chicken momma I need to post on here. I haven't had much sleep for a few nights but I did get really good sleep last night.

Sunny, I agree with you on the drama thingy too. I'm also glad we like eachother and can accept disagreements as just plain that, it's nothing personal.

Yes I've seen some crazy things this month! Makes me soooo glad to not have to see it here! Some of it is even a little funny if I didn't feel so sorry for the victims. I don't know what folks are thinking!

I get done working at 6:30, so we can be there at 7pm or later. Whichever works best for you. It would be nice to see you again, but if I miss you, then we'll just do what we can. I'm so excited!!!

ETA: with our little chicken health problem, why don't you tell me how you want to meet. I won't be offended, no matter what. I promise!

I don't know to which thread you're referring, because I often don't even have time for this thread. Heck, I don't have time for drama, period! If we had it on here, this is one less place I'd be. We've got enough of it going on at home, with parenting and poultry parenting. I'm so thankful that members here don't even bring it here! We can actually depend on each other, and share chick orders and vaccines, and give advice, without worrying who's going to get stabbed in the back.

Missy, I'll call you when I get home then we can figure that out. I guess we should meet somewhere so nothing does get transported in especially since I have Wynnie in the livingroom still being momma to the ducklings. Wynnie is still letting us put any newly hatched ducklings in with her too. She has 1 egg left and she won't get off of it even though she has 4 ducklings in there running around with her. Another duckling just hatched this morning just when I had to leave to go to work and another one pipped. It was so cute watching the new duckling make his way over to the pipped egg and place his head right on top of it, I know he could hear the peeping inside the egg.

yes, this thread is very nice. I like that everyone is polite and not rude. I don't participate regularly on any of the other threads but I lurk and read sometimes and some people can be so rude.

thanks for the idea on the 7 grain cereal, Candy!

so cute! congrats on your hatch! You're a real pro now.

Missy, I must work until 8pm now so I'm going call you once I get off. I was going to have you and John meet to pick up your ducklings but he wants me to make sure we pick the girls. I'll let you know when and where.
