Nevadans?

Guys I have a pretty important question that is kind of urgent and I need some advice as this hasnt happened to me before ever.

Well I just went out into the coop to do my headcount, and i noticed that Mama Millie was up on a top perch. No banana (her baby). Looked aroud and found Banana sleeping in a corner by herself. Tried to put Mom back with baby but she went back up to the perch and left baby all alone. Banana is about 5 weeks old now.

Now, Banana has been very independent from day one, and wanders far from Mom during the day. When i am giving treats she is right up in the masses chowing down with the roosters and everyone else, so normally I wouldnt worry about her. However once i thought about it I realized that come morning when everyone is awake and waiting for me to let them out, she may get squashed or picked on or something, anything could happen without Moms protection.

So I put her outside with Cochin, who has the two 2 week old chicks. I watched for a second to see if cochin would attack her, but nothing happened. Walked away for a few minutes as Banana was screaming her little head off. Once she stopped crying i went to check and she was under cochins wing safe and sound.

Went back again and she was NOT under cochin anymore, but rather sort of near her. I put her back under cochin and checked again in ten minutes. She was next to her but not under her.She is sort of laying near cochins butt with cochins tail feathers draping her body and her head and tail sticking out,

I am worried because it is going to be 60* tonight and it is fairly breezy out there.
So what do i do? I am sure the coop will be warmer, with no breezes, but i would chance her getting hurt.
However the broody box has the security of cochin, and she will be safe, but if cochin rejects her in the middle of the night she may catch cold.

what should I do?

Do you have a small cage or cat carrier or something? If so, put her in it for the night and in the morning, after the stampede, you can let her out. I would definitely try to get her into something to sleep in the barn for sure!

okie dokie, thank you. You think I oughtta just let her do her own thing then? Should I let her be with mama cochin and the other two babes tomorrow during the day and see if they hit it off?

If she's 5 weeks and she's already very independent and the other chickens are accustomed to seeing her around without her mama, she should be fine. I'd watch for a while tomorrow.

Maybe just at night, for her own protection, put her in a little cage in the barn til she gets bigger.

If the adults won't let her eat or whatever, then I'd try putting her with the cochins. I'm really wary of broody mamas and ANY new bird in with them. But I've never had a broody cochin. You'll have to monitor the situation either way.

Just make sure her little night cage has plenty of warm shavings.

Thank youuu :D

I trust Cochin. Shes a great mom and i think she WANTS to adopt Banana but to be perfectly honest I dont think the three of them fit under her, shes so tiny and bedbug is actually kind of big...I could tell that when Banana was loudly peeping when i first put her in the broody kennel Cochin had actually gone to where she was and put her under her wing. Great advice, Ill throw her back in the coop in a cat carrier and put a feather duster in there to crawl under if she gets chilly.

I had a situation like this this summer. Try putting the baby up on the roost with the mom. Next to her. She should let her snuggle with her. I had a broody mom that wouldn't take care of the babies during the day (after just a month) allow them to sleep with her on the roost for a good month after. She probably tried to get baby up and baby couldn't/wouldn't do it. Try it. I'm pretty sure it would work. I've had one broody mama roost with her babies after just a couple weeks.

Mama probably is trying to teach Banana to roost, but because it is going to be cold tonight I agree with Lacy Blues that she should be in a carrier to keep warm. Maybe tomorrow night you could put her on the roost next to her mama and see if she will stay. My Wyandotte hen had her babies on the roost with her at 5 weeks. Then she started laying again and I let dad take over.

I've got my mouse ready to highlight and copy. Boy do they sound yummy!
Okay you two...I'll get right on it!

You're telling me! It's even more difficult to show a picture that you've already uploaded! I wanted to show the bee pick on a Bee thread in another forum and there's simply no obvious way to do it. Arrrgghh!

Hey Sheryl - glad your visit went so well! I don't know what the regs are up your way but Carson City just relaxed theirs so you can have bees in town. Penturner has them and he is very close to downtown. Just a thought...

Best way to do this is to literally highlight the photo, press control c, then go to the page you want it on and press control v .... try it. It works for me!

My neighbor 2 doors down has bees. Thanks to him, I didn't have to play squash blossom matchmaker.
I would love it if someone around here had bees. I spent all summer playing matchmaker with the squash and the tomatoes! Next year I'm planting a ton of flowers amongst my veggies! Sheeesh!

WOW, that is extra super cute!!!!
reminds me of this photo i posted on facebook yesterday (NOT my photo)

tee hee hee!

Sheesh so now i am just toying with EVERYONES emotions! Went to go put Banana BACK in the coop and mama cochin had all three tucked under her chest and was probably FINALLY comfy. three little heads poking out, with banana in the middle and the two little ones on either side of her.
But she is back in the coop and I am confident that she will stay warm in there. Probably wondering what the heck just happened!

Thanks all!
