There seems to be a fifth toe or talon protruding from my 7 year old hen. I am just now noticing it and this hen has usually always been the bottom of the pecking order. She's an Easter egger, and if you can see in the picture the talon or whatever it is is black. In the second picture she is the one on the left. Everything else seems to be normal: she's eating, walking, drinking and is alert. The only thing I can think of is I feel shes a bit underweight. I have another Easter egger and she does not have this protrusion. Is it a deformity? If so, should I just leave or is it something to be concerned about?

Are you sure this is a hen? Looks like rooster spurs to me.

That is a hen.. spurs on older ladies are not uncommon!

ETA: Hens can also crow but her saddle feathers don't lie and neither does her comb/wattles.. She is probably coming out of molt if she isn't currently laying she MAY return as daylight lengthens.

Is it just me or does it look like that chicken has hen feathers? I don't see a pretty rooster tail, the hackles have that lovely pattern that always throws me off, but those look long but fairly rounded too.

Really? Huh, you learn something new everyday. My bad! I've never encountered a hen growing out spurs. I had a lot of chickens get pretty old but never saw them. Must be unique!
