New BYC death on slow connections, slow computers; site crashes and hangs web browser...

Nifty gave the link with all the info, but it is $12 for 6 months or $20 for one year, and has a number of benefits besides being able to turn off ads.  You can purchase this in the Store link at the top of the page.

I wish I COULD afford to upgrade but that would not help me here anyway....

1. I HAVE to use free poverty dial up or not have internet period.
2. Can't do any video etc because of connection timing.
3. Can not download anything.... connection times out
4. I do own a TV and converter box that was given to me but that still only gets PBS (public broadcast system) when it wants to come in.

I live on 500 monthly and keep my home, land and medical under that.
So I just count myself blessed to be able to get online when it will let me on.

I don't smoke, drink, eat out, go to movies, etc, and carpool to Church. I try and live within my means and do without what would take me beyond that. Such is life. I can breathe (most of the time) and live with physical limitations. I am just happy I can, when I can. Period.

I thank BYC and other sites for having a way for me to access without paying. I COULD NOT be here otherwise.

Sounds like you're grateful for what you have, bluebirdnanny. I think we could all learn something from you.

Oh wow my computer has crashed since i joined and is running extremely slow even off the site now I was about to take it to the repair shop, after reading this post i realized it started after i joined , this is a great site and and it has a lot of info i need , but i am questioning that now my computer is one year old and lightning fast connection which is gone now Wow again im in disbelief a website can do this and why they would.

Notice that some folks who have nothing meaningful to contribute to the issue at hand other than pimping paid membership and calling others ungrateful and complainers are themselves non-paying members. LOL :)
I'm grateful for everything. Even a bad day alive is better then a good day dead. I think the Lord for that each morning when I don't wake up dead.

So let's get down to business.
I'm not having popups. People who are getting popups have some kind of advertising & tracking spyware infesting their puters, not BYC's fault.
Followed Ivan3's links and Nifty-Chickins detailed instruction but it didn't help me any.
My puter is not a Ferrari but it's not a Model T puttin along on the interstate either.
Running XP with IE 8 on wireless dsl connection, supposedly one of the faster connections that CenturyTel offers. Network status is 54mbps.
75 gb drive
12 gb used space
61 gb free space
.99 gb ram
Only add-on running is Java Sun Microsystems
11 startup items. All AVG antivirus and systems related.
I run a bare bones lean clean machine, no resource hogging programs installed. No MicroSoft Office, Word, Outlook, dancing baby screensavers etc installed. Don't game, porn, email or Skype on it. Dump cache & defrag regularly.
Pretty sure that ad causing my grief is the one at the top & bottom right in the topic threads. Before it runs a video bogging my puter some of the url are:
http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/simgad/13491871357336609013
http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/simgad/4205721410776130453

http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/simgad/7232891201934442605
I can't copy the url when the video starts because when I right click it for properties it says (I assume it's from Google):
Settings
Global Settings
About Adobe Flash
I don't mouse over it or interact with it. At random times it simply starts playing video & sound. I can be in the bathroom or kitchen and hear my puter start playing music and a woman start talking about Dr Martin shoes etc. Seems the ad is buggy because it skips & freezes up and sounds like gibberish.

Not everything Niftychicken asked for but hopefully enough info to solve this issue. Thanks! :)

I accidentally hover all the time. I have 4 cats, 4 chickens, and a musician for a boyfriend. I'm regularly interrupted and have not yet trained myself to re-position my mouse before looking away for 3 seconds or more. The ads are skinny and tall on the right hand side, because that's where most people keep there cursor. It's a trap. :)

I just wanted to chime in with something other than a snarky video... I have a first generation Mac Pro built in late 2007. It has a medicore graphics card as it used to be a server, and is powered by 2 dual-core Xeons. I use a semi dated version of Mac OS (10.6.8) and Google Chrome. My internet connection is a modest 1.5Mb. I honestly have never had any problem with any ad on this site, and it runs really fast on my 6 year old computer. If you're having performance issues with the site, you might look into your computer being infected with a virus or other malware, because I can tell you it's zippy here for me. I can boot into windows 7 and give it a shot from there, but I suspect the results will be similar.

If you're really experiencing crippling issues with the ads and you're 100% sure your computer is free of malware or viruses, you might just pick up a nice little plugin like Ad Block Plus which should put an end to your woes and enable you to truly get something for nothing.

Here's a link: https://adblockplus.org

For my part I'd like to thank the wonderful people who have set up this site and keep it running, it's an amazing resource and I feel very lucky to have it.

I live in an area where there is no cell service also. However, I use Mozilla firefox to load all my programs/websites etc. They have a FREE add-on that blocks ads and I do mean blocks them. I am not bothered by any ads on this site or others. I highly recommend you change to them if you can. btw - I think this site is extremely useful & fun. Thanks & kudos to those who run it for us chicken lovers! Sue

I am a non-paying member of the forum and I would never complain about it. Did you mean I was pimping paid membership?

Edit: Ah, after decoding that sentence I see what you're saying. I just thought it would be okay to remind people that this is a free service that no one is forced to use, and to cut BYC some slack.

Hey--I had all these issues with BYC-- and more. Sometimes I would type at 30 WPM and the letters on the screen could only show up at 15 WPM. The pop-up ads sucked up all my internet. It was TERRIBLE. It had only happened in the past few months--since I started using it last August, it had gotten slower for me every month, and every internet explorer software update I did, it just got worse. Some other websites were like this, but ad-heavy BYC was by far worst. Cleared Cookies--worse. And now I couldn't remember my password.
Then, I switched to chrome. SO MUCH BETTER!!! Google chrome never does any of these things. I thought it was my ssslllooowww windows 7--it was internet explorer.
