I have 3 Dark Cornish chicks that hatch in the past 24 hours. One has an umbilical issue.

The chick is acting pretty lively now. But I know issues like this can go downhill fast. Is this chick a lost cause?

New pictures. It looks like the chick has intestine pulled through. I tried helping out, but the poor things screamed and then went sorta catatonic when I was manipulating the mass.

I think this one is beyond hope. How would you put this baby out of it's misery?

Hmm, yea that doesn't look so good.
You could give it a day or two, if you want.
My method for culling very young chicks is a knife/cleaver across the neck (after folding a paper towel around the chick) and I hold the knife in place on the neck, and hit strike the knife with a hammer or block of wood. I can't swing an axe accurately and I've always been afraid to use shears/scissors in fear of stopping short.
:hugs

Thanks I think I'll give it time, but it seems to be going downhill. It was walking fine earlier and now it mostly sits on it's hocks.

Sorry :hugs I use ether since I'm squeamish about taking their heads off - starting fluid sprayed onto a paper towel, then the towel and the chick placed into a small airtight container. The chick drifts off to sleep and then passes away.

The chick is looking much better this morning. The... whatever it is... is drying up. I put some BluKote on it and put the chick in the brooder with it's two hatch mates, the 4 I hatched last week, and Tiny.

This little chick started getting into a fight with one of the older chicks that started picking at it. And it is running around, eating, drinking, and well....
