Greetings and glad to be here!
We finally bit the bullet and bought a mixed flock of 4 brown egg layer chicks in early April of this year when it became clear we would be spending a lot of time with our 3 kids(11,7,6) at home in the coming months! We live in the far east bay burbs of SF. It has been a huge learning curve but all 4 of our ladies are doing well at almost 18 weeks-although it would be nice to have some eggs already!
We ended up with(after much research and mistakes in figuring out breeds from photos of chicks online) a Buff Orpington named Lemon that is the sweetest and most tolerant lady ever, a Buff Brahma named Flossie that is sassy but still doesn’t mind being held and pampered(she is at the top of the pecking order), a Cuckoo Marans that I thought was a Barred Rock for a good couple of months...she is not a fan of being handled but she is pretty and very curious. She also lets us know if we are late opening up the coop in the morning! Has always been very vocal. Last but not least we have our RIR runty chicken Brownie that had pasty butt that I nursed and bathed as a chick and now I am wondering if she might be a Buckeye because her comb is tiny and looks like a pea comb! She hates being held but will sit on your arm, and LOVES to eat bugs of any kind. They are weird and wonderful and we love them.
I let them free range in the morning and evening and right now we have a temp chicken tent(we have a lot of hawks!) with sand for a run, but will be converting the space under the trampoline for a run soon to give them more space and better shade.They love it under there!
We also have 4 cats and 3 fish.
I have wanted chickens my entire life and grew up in a house full of rescued animals in the burbs of a medium sized town in Indiana that included a couple cockatiels and zebra finches over the years. Have always been fascinated by birds both wild and tame!
