new coop begun-two years later and we're still working on it

Wow that's a really creative chicken coop.

Definitely will be an eye catcher!

Hadn't gotten that far in the thinking but hmmmmm...... not a bad idea at all. Pretty darn good actually. DH hasn't gotten past the thrill of the idea of a coop he doesn't have to scrunch over in!

Thanks for the compliments everyone. Haven't made any progress in the last few days. DH had a presentation to get ready for work then his truck died and it was a not so fun day with that but we worked it out. Hopefully we'll be back on track soon. He did buy the siding for the side walls. I think once he starts getting that up he'll be inspired to finish the whole project. He hasn't noticed the two goat books I picked up at the library yesterday....

What are you going to use for siding?

I think he got T-111 or whatever it is called. Something not too expensive but should hold up for sometime. Still deciding whether to paint it or stain it. He got the stuff with narrow grooves in it. We'll see how it looks. I was off buying chick and duck food while he was at Home Depot. I have got to get these roosters out of my basement!

I'm so excited to see how yours turns out! DH gave me the green light to do this for my coop as well! YAY

Not sure what kind of siding to use on it or what else to incorporate into the design!

Keep us posted

Thanks for finding that website! I have alot of good 2x4's of various sizes and will order the kit.

Since my chickens are all free range, I think this will be perfect for them.

I have a question. I thought I'd put an opening up on the top so the girls can come in/out via the upper roof area. They fly up into the trees at night, so I know they could get up and in. I'd have some sort of covered opening, and a landing perch. Nest boxes inside on various levels??? Then I can close the door, and it'll keep the varmits from getting in. The slanted walls make it so the varmits can't climb up.

What do you think?

I think that sounds great. But I think all the 2x4's or 2x2's have to be the same length, although they can be any length from 3 ft to 9 ft. I believe 9 ft is the longest advised. Your idea sounds good, though. Would you have the coop fenced in?

Did you order yours from Stromberg's, and if so, did you order the booklet that goes with it? A secret--I found out that I DID order 2 kits 4 or 5 years ago, but I don't remember a booklet being offered then. Well I decided that since everyone seems to like this design and kit, that I'd better get another before they go up, so I did, plus the booklet. I can't wait to get home and start my chicken city.

Henrietta23---The best thing to do to the T1-11 siding is to stain it and the waterseal it. We used to live in a house that had this siding and we would waterseal it every 5 years so that it would last....and it still is today. Note: we told the new owners how to keep it looking nice
