Just joined the BYC. Am looking to start a little flock in the spring. Working on ideas for Coops at the moment. Will Build myself.
Wondering about challenges of the cold weather up north and strategies to keep the flock safe.
In the Attleboro area, anyone else nearby??

I am also in MA. Ludlow, MA. I have 2 coops, one of them inside a run for protection from flying predators (haws and falcons), plenty of them here. Basically, I would make sure you have a coop that is mostly walls, with windows you can open, one door for you to get in to clean it and a small door for them to get into. Chickens will do ok as long as they have a place to hide from the snow but even more from the winter gusty winds we get. I am including a picture of my coop, hope it gives you an idea on what may work for you too. The red one I bought, I had it made. The yellow one my father in law built it for me, when I had about 6 chickens (now 32 of them). Another thing I do, is I buy meal worms and I feed my chickens as a treat, because there is not a lot of worms/insects they can get to in the winter. I also add a bit more of cracked corn in their diet. Both of them have nesting areas and places for them to roost at night on the opposite side of the nesting boxes. Good luck!

Welcome! I am also in MA - in the Merrimack Valley area. This is my first year with chickens. I have a mixed flock of 5 hens on a small suburban lot. I purchased my coop from Coops for a Cause up in NH and built the run from a neighbor's old wooden swingset. The only thing I've done for winter so far is add some extra roofing panels to the run (normally a 1/2 covered A frame) so that I don't have to shovel it out, and add a water heater to keep the water from freezing. I'm debating whether to grease up the chickens' combs next week (weather going down to the single digits. Weds supposed to have a high of 12), but haven't made up my mind.

Best of luck planning for your flock! Have fun - chickens are the best!
