New Hampshire!

Pics
I have 10 New Hampshire hens and a roo, six Jersey black (straight run 3 hens , 3 roos) , 10 hens and a roo that They are either Plymouth Rock, BRs or Dominiques, IDK how to tell them apart at this point. They were part of a 'breeders pick special' so I am not sure . They all had white spots on their heads and a white butt otherwise all black. Also10 assorted rare, again part of a breeders pick surprise pack so I am still guessing, a pair of ducks and a pair of geese... again part of a surprise breeders pick and not yet feathered, so I am not sure. LOL It has been fun guessing. I think the ducks are 'Runners' because they sure don't waddle and are hard to catch. I am a beginner as well. This is a new farm experience. Lesson One, build the coop before getting the chicks, LOL I am trying hard to complete the coop as fast as the chicks have been growing. I am in Dalton north and next to Littleton. Almost forgot and 2 turkeys (OMG are they the dumbest birds I have ever dealt with)

In your face page it says your from Derry. I'm a little familiar w/ Littleton and not that much w/ Dalton. Have you been raising chickens before or did you just decide to order some up
smile.png
I didn't order some but I wish I did. This guy was selling Americana's and I took 6 then I heard about these 2 RIR so I got them. Now my niece I found out last yr. raises some so her daughter sent me 2 silkies 2 buff orpingtons and a black roo. And for easter my son gave me 2 pekin Ducks. Threes a thread for our's check for your ducks, and Chicky's too! Where in the process of making a home for the ducks and well have to expand the girls house too. Not sure about the roo. Honey likes him, not me. And I know one of the ducks is a boy, the other acts so much like a girl. I hope so!

I'm having the same problem, I can't let them loose! I have to corner them to pick them up or have some food and catch them, but they don't get caught twice. Our link give out good info on getting them to like you. I have been spending time w/ them on my tablet and their starting to get closer to me. I was the plague before. And clicker traing w/ peas or cheap veggie or leftover supper

So nice to know there are others near that have chickens

After talking with the stores, I was beginning to wonder if anyone up here had any?!!

Still waiting on mine, they said two weeks, so have been going around stores, and such looking for lumber, hoping to make atleast some of the coop out of salvage!

Mine will be all barred rocks this year, and some Dom's next year

Littleton/Dalton is right by me...was wondering how tough you guys have to go on predator control for your coops? I have seen coyotes here, skunks, saw a beautiful eagle in the river at Walmart in Littleton, sat a watched it till the ravens chased it away...it was HUGE! So thinking I better bomb proof my coop

I have been taking care of chickens and other farm animals for food, and raising them since a little one, with my parents, then till around my 30's or so. Just getting back into it all and starting with chickens
smile.png
How we used to raise them and now is very different though. I am learning a lot of new things and appreciate everyone's help and advice!!!

So much has changed in the past twenty something years, it's incredible. I am getting back into chickens for the eggs and meat to help feed myself and in a healthier way also. Plus for bug control. One of my daughters keeps chickens in Maine and sells the eggs for $3.50 a dozen

never thought that would be possible, but she does it ! I am not going to sell anything, just for personal consumption.

It's back to rain here, so not much going on as far as the coop, still waiting on the chicks to ship, so have a bit of time, and thinking heavily on using one of the horse stalls for the coop. Just seems it would be safer and easier to convert and the right size too, but still not for sure yet.
hmm.png
Yes I do need a good door to keep them locked up tight...we have the occasional bear here too..another reason the stall might be a better idea

The old coop on the property has a fox den in it... :( so I am working on a new coop. It is set on 4 inches of rock it will have hardware cloth around the base and buried a bit. I also plan on a foot or two of fencing underground around the coop. The lady with chickens down the road warns that the ferrets and weasels are also a concern around here. She had a bear break into her coop a couple of years ago, he just made a mess, no lives lost.

So are you from Derry or up northern part. I get a little lost as to who I'm talking to. This is so fun! Are you the one having to do things month to month? with no names I forget their avatar names, unless it use it a lot. My ducks spent their first night out

I'm having a hard time trying to make them like me. Now they wont see me but a few xs a day. It should rain these nest few days so I wont be sitting in their pen to much. Hubby got me a 10" tablet so I could be w/ them and have something to do.
caf.gif
More like playing games while waiting for them to get used to me. Now I need to make my fermented feed as my mothers day gift came yesterday. Hubby bought it online and it was slow in coming!

I did live in Derry for 18 years, We 'bought the farm' in Dalton way up NH exit 43 off 93. I must have spaced out and wrote in Derry instead of Dalton, old habits die hard. :)

I know where Littleton is and I've heard of Dalton, showed a house their once, many yr's ago, ha ha! But I'm no good anymore on routes. We went to Littleton wed. to the Healty Rhino to pick up some unfiltered ACV.to make fermented feed for my girls. I hear it's better for them so I'll try anything once. Did you live up here before or retired up here? Born and raised! What made you decide to go whole hog on the deal! WOW Have you done this before, sounds more like your new to this!
smile.png

I'm upset, my son got me 2 Pekin ducks for Easter and I'm fairly sure their boys by their low voice. I was really praying for at least one girl. I'd love to order some girls and try again. But I don't think you can have 2 drakes and 2 hens. Guy thing!
