New Horse Owner, Any tips would be welcome!

I am hoping that I will be hired after volunteering for a while. Then I could get some income too.
That would be awesome, but I wouldn't get your hopes up about a paid position. The places like that around here are always tight on money so they aren't likely to be able to pay additional people. The most I would get hopes up about is that they might let you keep the horse there if you pay for his hay and grain, that way it doesn't cost them extra. If you get hired then GREAT! but don't count on it from my experience.

My personal advice... Is to hold off on a horse quit yet... ( Yes... I know that's a really really hard thing to do but... To take advantage of the resource you have found ! At the theripy stables ! Enjoy the horse friends you will meet ! ❣️ Put the $ you would have spent on vet checks hay ... Hay delivery ... Tack water troughs, trough heaters ( winter's coming ) :) and take riding lessons ( iv ridden all my life ! Still... Take every chance I get ! To have a lesson ! ( I to am on a shoe string budget ! ) I clean stall every wen. In exchange for help :) no shame in it !
I hang on the fence as outhers are taking lessons as often as life let's me to ! If someone says they know every thing about horses ? RUN ! ... No one dose ! Your investment in YOU... Will not be a waste ! I PROMISS you ! It will give you time to have your barn area finnished :) and you can see what it will take to care for them in winter :) make some riding buddy's :) possibly :) and... Take the time to find your soul mate horse friend ! And be able to be the best soul mate you can be... To your new fur friend ! Pritty is wonderful... But I've met some AMAZING ! UGLY HORSES ... Met and owned ! Lol

I didn't think about that, that is true. Their website says they rely on donations from others to keep their place up and running. So yeah, I guess I shouldn't. That would be really great! Cuz since I don't have really anywhere to put the horse, I could just board him/her there like you said. I will definitely take that into consideration!

Look at it this way - you aren't having to pay them for the very valuable experience you will gain just handling horses. Don't underestimate it; every horse is different, and you can gain skills you never realized you needed dealing with different temperaments.

(helping deal with the inevitable injuries and other stupid things horses do to themselves, as well):he

I think that is what I am going to do. I am not very experienced, and working at this therapy stable would be a really amazing way to work up my experience level. Yes it is sooo hard to do! I have wanted and dreamed of having a horse my entire life. There have been so many times when I thought I was going to get a horse, then turns out it was a dud or something, I was not happy lol. So gaining more experience and waiting for the right time and the right horse is a good idea. And yes i can finish building the barn and the boxes for the compost, and do more research so I am fully prepared!

Very true! Everything I am learning is free. yes, animals have a way of doing idiotic things and hurting themselves lol. I love your profile picture by the way. :D

This is so awesome this thread picked up like this with so much great info. It sounds like you are moving in a GREAT direction, :yesss: Being a volunteer there would be just fantastic.

I'll add one thing to your list of what to have the owner do: pick up all 4 feet. And hold them up and maybe smack on them a little. SO many horses are not real good about their feet, and it's really hard for someone who is new to do it. Yet they need their feet picked up every time you ride, you will need to check the feet are OK and no stones, the hooves need to be cleaned etc.

Really, really excited for you! :wee
