I am hoping to go to a college with a good vet school. Any recommendations? I was thinking Rutgers, but it's so big...

Rutgers could not be more awesome, and it gets very small very quickly. My older daughter thought the same thing, and she was very successful there, and ended up working in the admissions office and giving tours to prospective students and their families. My younger daughter is a junior at Douglass, and she and I will graduate at the same time - I am at Rutgers doing my Master's. She's planning on moving on to an Occupational Therapy program, and chose Rutgers over a school with a built-in program. (The price was one of the factors - not gonna lie.) I started there a million years ago in the Animal Science program, intending to go to vet school, but never finished. (Just as well - never would have passed Org. Chem.) It's an excellent program, and schools in states that have built-in vet programs leave spaces for those students from states that don't, so don't think that will affect your chances of getting into vet school elsewhere. You should check out Ag Field Day on April 27, and walk around the campus. All of the barns are open that day, and all of the clubs have tables - it's a great way to get a feel for the campus. Super crowded though - get there before nine to get a parking space. They also have a great high-quality craft fair and food fair on the other side of campus, and tons of events on the other campuses, too. (The rest of Rutgers stole the Ag Field day idea, so now it's collectively called Rutgers Day.)

Sounds fun, but I think I will be away the 27th. I do like Rutgers, I know I'd have to apply for a vet school though. I want to specialize in avian and reptile, so I'd probably end up going to vet school even longer.

I want to specialize in avian and reptile as well! Zoo animal seems to be calling my name and I would love to work myself into the Phoenix zoo at some point.

The great thing about vet school is most programs are just 4 years. Then to get board certified in any one area you work as a resident for 4-5 years, but at that point you are already a veterinarian. I will soon be looking into the pros and cons of a residency. There are so many options in veterinary medicine though!

Vet schools are 4 years and then many new grads go on to do a one year internship. This way they rotate through many of the different specialties in order to gain experience and see if a particular specialty interests them. For the new grads that don't go on to do an internship or know they don't want to specialize, they go straight on to be a GP. After your year internship you apply for a residency which is another 3 years. When it comes to options for a career in vet med, the sky's the limit!!!!

This goes for veterinary nurses too!!!!! 2 or 4 year nursing program (rutgers program is amazing), another 2 years to specialize. :)

I feel like a guidance counselor :)

It's nice you can all pick each others brains.

3 more years. So, to become specialized, I could be going to school for 12 more years. Oh well, if I can get a job I like, it will be worth it. Cornell and Rutgers are definitely two of my choices, but I will still look around.

Shadow rabbit, it seems like a lot of schooling but its really not so bad. In fact, you will probably really enjoy it. Just take your school one step at a time! I graduated college a little over a year ago now and thought I would love taking a break from school. I realized a few months into my break though, that I really, really missed school! Now I can't wait to get back and I am counting down the days!
