New Jersey

Hi everyone- I lost two of my seven hens in the last week. I don't know why... But we are really sad. We would really like a few more. We live in northwest NJ in Long Valle. I am wondering if it seems too late to order more chicks before the winter, or alternatively if anyone has some hens they are looking to part with. Or if you know a place to buy hens locally?

Thanks in advance
Jessika

Mame 1616 had three RIR a little over a year old lookung for a home.

Thanks, Gail! Hope those ladies you picked up are working out for you!

Cirkus, I'm sorry to hear about your girls. When you have such a small flock, the losses are hard to bear. Those hens are still available, but I won't be until the weekend of the 21st. We can make arrangements to get them to you then, if you're interested. I pass right through Long Valley on the way to my friend's in Hackettstown. If I'm heading up there that weekend, I can drop them off, or if not, we can meet halfway, unless you have some business near Middletown, then you can pick them up.

OR

You can wait until the Sussex Show (Oct 19) and get a couple of girls in the sale area there.

The girls are doing great. They are free ranging with the flock for a week now but are sleeping in separate quarters for now. They seem to prefer the rabbit coop. Funny thing though...the one orphington must have been the head hen cause she is giving my 2 bantam roos the business They think their in charge and she thinks otherwise ha ha she towers over them and she has the weight to push them around. The sussex is my adventurer. She has discovered parts of the yard where no chicken has gone. She's even got watered by the hose as she blends with the flowers.

At the 4H NJ State Poultry show on Saturday September 7th there were 160 birds! I got best LF Hen with my Welsummer out of 20. 3rd Best Bantam Hen out of 30 with my D'Anver Hen. Best and Reserve Bantam pullets with my Langshan pullets out of 23. Best Trio with my young Faverolle Trio. Third Best Pair with my D'Anver Pair. Reserve Bantam Rooster, Reserve Bantam and Reserve In Show with my Salmon Faverolle Cock!!!!!!!! I would like to thank all the breeders who helped me get to this point and obtain these awards!

LOL! That's awesome! My Sussex was an explorer, too. But my Orpingtons are all pretty mild.

Lopatcong here! Started my chicken obsession August 11 and I have been loving it since. I have two Production Reds and I may be picking up a couple more in the next few weeks.
