New member and chicken owner!

I do not the ground is just dirt, do I need to get hay? the coop is very spacious and has a little ramp the chickens go up into to lay. They haven’t figured out hot to get on the ramp yet. I have roosting poles they get on during the day but right now they are laying on the ground for the night.
Blue baby made a great suggestion of box of hay for them to sleep in temporarily.
Be aware that predators and vermin can easily dig up and through a dirt floor. For total safety, I would put down a layer of hardware mesh on the floor and extend it about 6 inches up the walls. That should hold them off! :)

Yes I have boxes with pine shavings in them on the ground they did not want to lay in them. I ended up bringing them in because I was reading in other forums about raccoons and rats and so I got nervous another their first night out there getting snatched. I’m headed to rural king to get some hardware cloth and to make sure they are protected. I love BYC and everyone on here! Everyone has provided great advice :thumbsup

Hi Carleigh so happy you joined the fun! :weeGood luck with your little friends!

Thank you everyone for ALL the advice and tips! I ended up getting 1/2 hardware cloth for the top and bottom, and the fence I have goes 1 foot under the ground. I placed the chicks up in the inclosed part of the coop with hay and pine shavings with the heat lamp on because it is 50 degrees tonight but so far they are doing great! This will be their first night out:woot
