We live in NH and are new to chickens. We got 12 chicks at one day old from a local garden store. 4 Easter Eggers, 4 Barred Rocks, and 4 Rhode Island Reds. We would like to get more into homesteading as we have 12 acres of land and a nice garden. We felt chickens would be next on our list. They are now almost 6 weeks old and they moved outside to their coop/run this past weekend. So far they are doing very well. We had some pasty butt the first week but cleaned that up and so far everyone seems happy & healthy. We have one son 5 years old and a baby on the way... we ordered the chicks before we knew I was pregnant haha. We have three dogs (all boxers) and had puppies the year I was pregnant with my son. Chicks have been wayyyyy easier than cleaning up and taking care of 8 puppies was! We both work fulltime, but close to home and love to be at home playing in the yard when we're not at work. So far we love watching the chickens play and seeing their different personalities come out. Some are more friendly than others but we have picked them up and hung out with them a lot as they are our pets and will be used for eggs. We don't plan on eating them. In the last week we have been infatuated with seeing if any of them turn out to be roosters. We have our eyes on one EE and one Barred Rock that seem to have rooster-like qualities. All the RI Reds seem to be hens and from what I read their colors easily sex them when they hatch.
I've been lurking on BYC since before we got our chickens reading all kinds of forums and articles. In the last few days we've been looking at lots of sexing chickens threads. I'll post a picture of the barred rock that has been making me think it's a rooster- not sure if it is white enough in color though- maybe it's just a hen with a bigger comb. On my phone and in person the comb is already red and the bottom of the beak on the cheeks is also red. The comb just looks so much bigger than the other three barred rocks. Let me know what you think! I'll have to get a picture of the suspected EE rooster. We've called her Mrs. Specks from a young age but now been calling it Mr. Specks.
