New puppy!! DNA test? What do you think he is? UPDATE on pg 7

hes a very pretty pitty would be my guess...
alot of poeple see the big bulky pits now and forget that the apbt should actually and origionally was a much leaner machine...

in terms of the dna tests, they are fun, but the results shoudl be taken with a grain of salt.
we did some in my college biology class i used the 3 top brands at the time (about a year or so ago) and tested my chinese crested, our 2 chihuahuas and my parents cocker spaneil...
all 4 dogs we know the full genetic background on, my crestie and 2 chihuahuas i have 10 gen pedigrees on lol, and the cocker we have a 5 gen (hes an english x american cocker with pure on either side)

all 3 tests on all 4 dogs came back all kinds of odd lol.
my chinese crested was "under 10% poodle" and they couldnt determine the other breeds...ok, well shes definatly under 10% poodle being that shes not poodle at all lol) the other 2 tests said "unknown"
1 of my chihuahuas came back as a pomeranian, pappillion, and samoyed... on one test *blink blink* chihuahua on another and pomeranian x poodle on the last one.
the other chihuahua came back as a poodle on the first one, a doxie x pomeranian on another, and "under 10% poodle" on the third...

and the cocker spaniel came back as cocker spaniel on one, german sheperd x springer spaniel on another and poodle on the third...

(becaus eit was for a class we got huge discounts on the testing kits)

i know things have gotten a little more accurate as theyve added more breeds since i did it but still, ive seen some come back spot on, some come back seemingly correct based on how the dog looks, some come back completly odd and some come back completly incorrect...
so while its a fun little venture and intersting to see what it comes back with, but definatly dont bet the farm on the results lol

He is sooo cute!
Looks like mostly pitt to me.
No Shar Pei though - they have tiny ears. Come in blue though like my dog.

he looks CC blue to me. the body says ALL pit though. ignore size as a determination at any point with a rescue dog. if they were starved or neglected they may be a little stunted.

take a good friends mostly lab,, little bit pit that he got. hes 98 pounds less then a year and still growing and can look an adult in the face. theres dane in his hight and mastiff in his face. best dog ever though, but very good that he went to a single adult male, because the puppy stage with tiny kids would have ended up looking like foot ball tackles lol.

Yea, today he has one up and one down ear.

The American Pit Bull/Australian Shepherd mix is Casey, the black and white dog in the video. I know that she doesn't look like it, but her mom was a purebred blue merle AS and her dad was a purebred black and white pit bull.

Texasgal, oh my gosh that dog is gorgeous!!

Bagenhens, very true! Many people only think of staffordshire's when they think of pit bull. Casey, our other pit bull mix, is 1/2 ABPT. Personally, I love the ABPTs.

They are definitely leaner and the head is shaped a little different.

He started feeling sick Wednesday evening and was clearly feeling ill yesterday, so we moved his first vet appt up to Friday morning (today).

He has parvo and roundworms.

Our vet is treating him like he would be in the puppy ICU in the back of the vet office, but is letting us do it at home. He said he found better success if the dog can stay at home as long as we are ok with being trained to give the fluid drip (IV bag) subcutaneously, which contains an antibiotic (for any bacterial infection he may get since his immune system is shot), a med for controlling intestinal spasms, vitamins and electrolytes. No problem since we give chickens shots, etc. Once he is treated, we will have to disinfect EVERYTHING and deworm EVERYBODY.

Because we brought him in right away (1.5 days after the very first symptom appeared) and the fact that he is a large breed, the vet give him an 75%-80% chance to recover.

He went from being very active a couple days ago (the video!) to very lethargic.

The vet thinks he is adorable. He estimates the puppy is about 15 weeks old. He also thinks he is mostly American Pit Bull Terrier and stumped to what he could be mixed with (if anything). The vet also said, "Wow! He is going to be huge! He'll definitely be bigger than Casey!". Casey is the black and white APBT/AS mix in the video. She's 55 lbs.

Ya know they say that CC blue came from the introduction of Danes for size.

I'm so sorry about the Parvo issue. That stuff is horrible and some breeds are just so much more suseptible to it. I hope he comes through with no effects. I lost an entire litter of Rotties 20 years ago to that stuff. They've come a long way with it since. Matter of fact I had a friend that almost lost his male to it and it pulled through and ended up multi titled.

Yea, they should be fine since they are all up-to-date on their vaccines. Dr. Dan said that we shouldn't worry since there is a very low chance that they could get it and their immune system would have to be weak. Also, cats and chickens can't get it.

No puppies or unvaccinated dogs allowed on our property for a while!!

I wonder if Rotties are more susceptible to it.. DHs best friend just said a few moments ago that a number of years ago he lost a full litter to parvo as well.
