New puppy owner chat thread

Eventually that's true, but there's not much else you can do with a puppy while you're not home, until they're fully house broken and trained.
Your absolutely right. The crate is the safe zone that the pup uses while it can't be free. the problem is, that people think of it as a place to "keep" or "hold" the dog whenever needed, and put the dog in that crate for long periods of time, even after they can be trusted in the house.
If you think if it like me and you do, a tool in potty training, and the puppy's safe place, then you know when the crate is, and is no longer necessary. Thats the difference that a lot of people dont know.

Yep, it works just like a chain. It really depends on the breed. The prong is also know as the "pinch" collar, as it gives more direct pressure with the prongs. Some dogs just do better in a prong. I've heard of great success stories with the prong vs. chain, but jumping staring to the prong when a dog could already do well on a normal chain is a different story. Sounds like you know exactly what your doing with the prong, were some other people dont. :)
Avary knows exactly what she's doing around dogs lol
she's taught me most of the stuff that I know about them

So exciting! I love standard Poodles. Most people only see them as prissy show dogs, but really they're great farm dogs, and curly hair helps them stay water proofed. She sounds like so much fun! Congradulations!
Thank you! I hope the curly coat she will have as an adult will attract less debris than her soft, easily-matting puppy coat.

Yeah, that's the point! they shouldn't be used for out of control dogs, though
100% agreed. They're used for training, and giving a stonier signal, not a more sever collar you can use to, "show the dog who's boss" by pulling as hard as you can to cause discomfort. Thats what most people believe is the the point of the collar, and it will help with out of control dogs.

its always the owners fault. never the dogs

and that trainer sucks...
Yes, yes and yes!!!!
100% agreed! Aggressive PitBulls that get euthanized and usually pushed to that edge because of, bad environment, harsh training, no training, no socialization, etc. etc.
Never is it the dogs fault, the owner is supposed to notice and react to issues.

Definitely! Some of the issues are the owners' fault (e.g. her jumping problem) but none of them have ever had a dog before, so it's understandable.
Of course, you have to make mistakes to learn, and they will only do better in the future.
We made a bad choice on the food we few Pearl, and after doing research I'm pretty sure it contributed to reason she died of cancer. I've now switched to a raw diet for Comet, and Ember will be switched to it as soon as I can get proper ingredients.
