New to BYC forum, and new "Proud Parent" of my first pip!

Thanks for the welcomes and advice!
I just got home from work, and the pip is still pipping away after 24 hours, and has achieved a small hole for its beak. I am afraid the humidity dropped while I was at work and unable to add any water. . I am really feeling for this little pip, must be tiring, and I am afraid it is "sticky". I have added water to get the humidity over 60 and am going to wait a couple of hours before I consider helping it at all. What do you think? The other two eggs in there have not pipped, and I am setting eight eggs into the hatcher tomorrow.

still looking for my camera, so no pics yet(

It has fully hatched now after 30 or so hours of pipping. I very carefully and gradually assisted with bits of the shell, pausing for 30 minutes or so each time to add mist and to minimize disruption. The chick actually came out quite clean and fully detached from the membrane. Now to work out the leg cramps and the world is all hers!

Way to go!

This little one is still laying on its side, breathing heavily, and does not appear to have any deformities. I have given it some drops of water, but it has not tried to get up all morning. Is this normal? Also, when should I move it from the incubator to the brooder?

Oh and Babymakes6,
I am curious-how did you end up with a rooster named Cinderella?

You see, the rooster was part of a friends small flock, and optimistically considered a hen by the kids who named "her" Cinderella. He does not mind his status as a transgendered rooster, and it is such a cute name I kept it.

I agree, it is a cute name!
As for your chick, it is not normal for them to just lay around all the time. By now, she should be up and about. Try giving her a little sugar water, but if that doesn't help, you may need to cull. I WOULD NOT do it today, though! I would definitely give it 24 hours, unless it appears in pain.

The little chick just expired, from the heavy breathing for so many hours I suspect it was respiratory failure, perhaps due to the low humidity the lungs did not expand fully.
Anyhow, I will give it an honorable send off and clean out the hatcher for the first "real" run of a dozen eggs. I have more flat pans and sponges than before, and the means to add water through a tube.
I have a hunch I will be up to my ears in peeps in the next couple of months.

peace!

I have three little orps in the brooder now!

The first one hatched so fast, while I ran an errand it unzipped and was fully running around the incubator when we got home. The other two, after 24+ hours of pipping, I helped out of the shells and cleaned them up a bit. Each of those had a large green blob in the shell, which I suppose is poop, and I was glad to get it off of them when I did.

There is one last egg with a small pip and it is day 23, if there is no activity by the time I returm from work I will cull it.
