I just bought my first tom thats about 1-2 years old. iv had him close to a week and yet to see him strut or hear him gobble. hes very skiddish and even backs down from my hens when they chase after him. how long does it usually take for turkeys to “warm up” and begin to strut and gobble in their new home??

Please post a photo of him.

Each turkey is an individual and will have its own personality. From your description, this sounds like a yearling turkey and may not even be a full year old.

You could be right! im unsure as im brand new to turkeys lol. try to learn and understand them
We need closer pictures especially showing in focus shots of the head.

The size of the beard indicates a not so young turkey and it is pretty thick which also indicates a tom. The complete lack of spurs indicates a hen or a very young tom.

Hens can and do grow beards. I currently have 4 turkey hens that have beards.

The last photo is really hard to tell but does seem like the snood of a tom.

What breed is it? From the pictures it seems to be a hen. Not a Tom. It looks just like my Narraganset lady hen.
The breed is Turkey. All domestic turkeys are the breed Turkey.

It does look like the variety may be a Narragansett. Personally I cannot verify the sex from the posted photos since it is showing characteristics of an older hen or a young tom.
