new years black eye peas

Out of season I buy the petite (tiny) frozen sprouts. They are good. It is just in general the regular sized ones or a not national brand frozen sprout is aweful.

I must say that reading this post has certainly made me hungry. Again! It sure is interesting to see all of the variations people have for preparing their traditional New Years Day meal.
Being from the south, we ALWAYS ate black-eyed peas, collard greens, turnip greens, hog jowl or ham hock, and cornbread. Uh, and sweet iced tea of course! The eating of these traditional foods were supposed to bring prosperity for the New Year.
Old timers in my family would tell that the eating of greens would bring you "good luck" for having plenty of "greenback", black-eyed peas for "change", and hog jowl/ham for good "health".
Southern interpretation...........lol. Greenbacks are "dollars", black-eyed peas are "coins", and meat for good "health".
Wishing all my BYC friends a happy, healthy, and prosperous New Year!

Funny how different parts of the south put a different spin on why you eat what. My mom always said the greens were for money the black-eyed peas for health and the pork so you don't have to roll in the mud for a living like a pig. I eat them all because I like them...

greens = money
blackeyed peas = luck
rice = fertility
pork = moving forward
sweet potatoes = good health

We went out on a limb this year and did things totally different. We normally have hoppin' johns, pork,cornbread, you name it. Been that way for years. The last few years have been tough. My mom decided we needed something new. This year it was prime rib, little red potatoes roasted with rosemarry and garlic, green beans out of their garden, salad, yeast rolls, sweet tea and key lime pie for desert.

Have you ever roasted brussel sprouts? Toss with olive oil and seasonings and roast in the oven? Yummo!

I do that with sweet patoatoes that I cut up like french fries, toss with olive oil, cinnamon, sugar and a little nutmeg! My dh said that was the best meal, i had cooked some ribeyes on the grill and made a salad

MissPrissy,

I guess I have had those wrong for the last 53 years. We never have had the sweet potatoes on New Years just Thanksgiving and Christmas. I guess next year I need to add those as we can always use good health.

oh no we had rice....I dont want no more fertility around here....maybe with the animals but not the humans

Black eyed peas with a ham hock cooked all night in the small crock pot.
Turnip greens and collards with a ham hock in the medium crock pot.
Iron Skillet (the only correct way to cook it) cornbread.
Jasmine rice in the rice cooker.

salt, pepper, Amish butter, a tall glass of well water.

Not superstitious, just simply love the combination of all of the above.
