Newbie in many ways!

Hahaha! Sure it wasn't funny at the time though. So it seems with each response we're getting closer to being geese owners! Italians aren't great at websites so finding them will be tricky, i have managed to find a version of ebay here that is used for ads, there are only five 'lots' on offer near me, most are toulose or roman, one other is offering what he calls new guinea geese but when i goole that i get something looking completely different so not sure if his picture is correct or his ID, they all seem adult though so will follow another lead next week. Thanks all!

So your in summer right? most likely no goslings left for this year unless someones geese started late. This time of year you'll see folks selling off the stock they don't want to keep over winter, Geese breeding season is Jan-May. I have 2 very nice Toulouse geese. Toulouse is a nice breed of goose. Never heard of New Guinea geese?
What about markets,. places where livestock feed is sold might get some info on who has geese for sale.

So we'd planned to house them at night for sure so sounds like that's definitely a good idea from a sleep disruption point of view, we definitely need to fence them in and where the guests are they won't really be able to see them so that should be fine, means the only deterrent to would be theives will be their noise noise though as charging will only get them as far as the fence, so how closely we allow them to get to our side of the house is the next consideration, depends i guess on how theynare around us and the cats, otherwise we can run the fence a metre from the house (good punn by the way)
One more thing to bear in mind...geese poop like mad. Makes sense, their main food is grass..... so giving yourself a slime-free metre to walk around on is great. The poop from grass-eating geese doesn´t stink, either (unlike chickens´poop..)
I have a cousin who is Mr. Macho, hunter, a mans-man. There is very little that he will not stand up to and even less that frightens him. Seems though, that when he was a kid, there was a gander that lay in wait for him every day when he got home from school. The bus would drop him at his front gate and, no matter how quiet he tried to be, the gander would come charging and would usually get him before he got inside the house. He spent a large part of his youth with goose-bill-bruises on his arms and that part of the anatomy that we sit on.

So, when he comes to visit us he will do anything around the farm to help out but he will not go near my geese...and they are the sweetest things you can imagine.

So, Miss Lydia is right on when she says they make great watchers and property guardians. They really have to do very little...the fear is in the person usually.
Funny story. But not uncommon.. :)

Oh, I forgot about Romans! Der! Italy! But they´re quite small. Toulouse could do fine, especially if you get, say, 6!!
New Guinea geese, eh? You have to be careful, ´people here, for instance, try to sell (and succeed, by the way) cross-breeds, put an English name to them, and sell them as a purebred goose, when they´re just mixed...no problem if you´re not worried, but they charge a packet for them!
Have fun with your hunt!

And you've heard the old saying "when in Rome do as the Tufted Romans do"

That is the way it goes isn't it?

Brilliant! :-D so sounds like i have to be careful where i site my new geese if the ground is liable to get a bit messy, will they damage olive trees do you think? I had read that romans are small so not too keen, Toulouse seem pricey, I'm only going on the ebay ads though, a trio of romans are €140 while a pair of laying Toulouse are €400, all irrelevant really as we'd like goslings, if we've got to spend 20 years with them we'd rather they weren't angry little blighters with attitude problems.

The ground can get a bit messy in the area that they sleep or rest. I tend to clean it up in the morning to keep the ground fresh, and it makes superb manure.
I can´t say about olive trees. Some trees they won´t touch, and other trees they´ll have a right nibble at... leaves and bark, too.
Regarding the attitude problems, much depends on how you go about rearing them...for instance, show fear to a young gander, and he´ll make the most of it next time....Chinese, though, do have a bit of a reputation for having a little more attitude than others.
If the toulouse sell well, then you´ll get your money back in a year or two with the youngsters... (I don´t breed mine the first year, but some do). Although, I agree 400 euros is a lot of money for a pair of geese. Keep looking, you´ll find what you want... and then we want pics!!

Thanks guys! Think we have all we need in order to take the plunge now, you've been a GREAT help! We'll let you know how we get on, got a little more land to clear as we think we've decided on the perfect spot! And of course the fence to dig in and the house to build! ;-)

I just converted the 400 euros into American dollars

and here I thought 20.00 was alot.

Well since you have some work ahead of you to get it ready for your geese maybe by next spring there will be goslings galore to choose from[if you can wait that long]
