Newbie question.

Hello, I’m new here. I have read a few posts as I googled questions, and this morning I decided I just needed to be a part of this community. We have been raising 12 chickies for about 3 weeks now. We are keeping them in our house while the coop is built. My question is this, with all of the materials, food, and financial upkeep, do you ever feel like keeping chickens makes financial sense? Eggs are so cheap...Is selling eggs worth it to recoup some of the expense? Also, we have been giving them organic starter. I was recently told by a farmer that organic feed was just a gimmick. What is y’all opinion? Is organic feed better or the same.

It's all perspective......I enjoy having chickens for the joy that they bring to my family. Eggs is just a bonus!!!
I have never fed my flock organic feed. I have always fed them Purina All Flock with oyster shell in a separate container. My chickens are happy and healthy.

I feed organic as the feed is produced without the use of pesticides and I can sell my eggs as organic, pasture raised, omega enhanced eggs. I get more per dozen for my eggs than anyone around me.
No, you will never recoup the cost of your coop and your upkeep. That is not why most of us raise chickens though. It is for the joy of keeping them and knowing that the eggs were not factory produced by hens living in deplorable conditions so the cost of eggs can be "cheap". Cheap at what cost to the animal?

I'm new to the community too, but have had chickens for about 7 months now. It hasn't been any more of a financial "burden" than any other pets we've had...and yes, my chickens are pets. We started with 6 hens and have just added 7 chicks which are 3 weeks old now. I'm fortunate to have a husband who has a wood shop and loves to build things for me, so we were able to build our coop fairly cheap. Just 2X4's and OSB (which we cut in slabs to make it look like siding). And we had some left over tin for the roof. We didn't put a floor in it. Our girls love their coop!

Like several who have already replied, I enjoy watching and spending time with my chickens and getting those delicious eggs. And the best part is seeing my 17-month old grandson lose his mind every time he gets outside and sees the "chick chicks". He LOVES them!!
