I LOVE the Paintball Gun Idea!

We have a neighbor behind us who is a State Highway Patrol Officer. His dogs constantly JUMP their 3 foot fence and chase my grandkids pony and my 36-year old mare, as well as try to get into my quail pens, chicken pens, and dog kennels - especially when my German Shorthaired Pointer is in heat. I tried talking to them, and I called the County Sheriff's Department. The Sheriff's Dept. told me to shoot the dogs, but I was reluctant to do that. However, when they began running our horses and nipping at their tails and heels, I changed my mind. I loaded rat shot into my 22 pistol and peppered at least one of them. The owner was standing right out in his back yard when I started shooting and his dogs started yelping and ran back to his place and jumped the fence into his yard. He replaced his fence, and so far, they have not come back onto our property.

If they do, however, I think I will just HAVE to go get my son's paintball guns. That is just TOO great of an idea!

We got a bunch of ficas, bushes, etc., from Craigslist to make a fence. Freecycle sometimes has some too. Lots cheaper than a fence.

Just call animal control or the Sheriff's and tell them the dogs came at you in a threating maner when you tried to save your animals.

They look at this different than if its only livestock.

I love the paint ball idea. What better evidence could you have. If my dogs came home with paint on them I would be real
concerned. They bite someone it can be a lot of trouble for the owner.

the paintball thing wouldn't work if anyone knew it was you that did it. Many people find it is abuse if the animal wasn't attacking a person, many don't care about your birds. Same with rocksalt etc. My local animal control didn't care that we had "loose" dogs trying to get my chickens, the guy actually chuckled. I think there was a thread on here a way back about someone shooting a dog and it didn't die. Ended up having to pay the vet bills etc and I believe charges were filed against him for abuse. Not sure if that was a member or a link a member provided but the dog was a repeat offender and killed before.
Initially I felt bad for the dogs here but after talking to owners so many times I had to send dh, they apparently didn't believe me that I would do anything, they believed dh though
