Nipple Waterer Info

Neil, in the original picture you posted with the small tube and nipple(the picture I altered) doesn't that setup exceed the 8"-14" you mention? Between water level and nipple?
Steve

You can go to any water column level you need to for your design and then add a pressure limiting valve into the pipe before it reaches the nipples or at any point less than 14" above them also. You can get pressure limiting valves in several different pressure settings in the sprinkler section of hardware stores. That makes your upper end P.S.I go way up to around 60.

Yes it does.
But those operating parameters (8 to 14 inches of water column height) apply to the industrial situation where even the smallest amount of water wastage is an issue.

Non industrial useage is much more forgiving due to lower bird densities, deeper litter or out of doors housing. You can expect difficulties with water column height greater than 30"

I emailed QC Supply, Inc. about the recommended pressure for the nipple drinkers that they sell and here is their response...

Manufacturer stated 8-12 inch water column ( 1/4# psi) for all of the poultry nipples.

I specifically inquired about Product # 420006, Poly/Stainless Steel 360 Degree Nipple .

As Neil mentioned, this range (close to what he stated 8-14") is probably directed to the commercial houses. I would think that if you want to have water available in the coop that this would be a good range to follow in order to curtail wet litter. You could extend a line out of the coop and into the run which will normally be at a lower level thus increasing the effective water column height (and water pressure). Other than wastage (filling reservoir more often) the possible leakage at higher psi would not be as detrimental as it would inside the coop.

Here's my set up.

I would have suggested to you using a flexible tube to run from the bucket to the end of the nipple drinker line. The bucket would still be easy to connect/disconnect and it would have taken less fittings and pipe and fewer fasteners.

pacetruckguy, are those drip trays mounted on round pipe? I am looking at the photo on a very bad computer. If so where did you get them. I really like the trays for the drip issue and I am sure they would work here in our dry climate. a full glass of water will evaporate in a day here.

The adjustment on my coop waterer is to add or remove 2x6's under the waterers. Low tech and super easy. As chicks, they got 4.5" of lift at 2 weeks, and I removed a 2x6 as they grew. No lift right now, but I can always add one if needed. They are about 14" off the floor. I could raise them by drilling a new hole and moving the horizontal tub up a bit. I have about 12" of fall from the bottom of the bucket to the nipple. Going from small to larger pvc should lessen the water pressure a bit.

The waterer I have in the brooder is adjustable.

Neil, I have tried to PM you and E-mail you regarding Nipples. No reply to either. The email was returned as undeliverable.
Please contact me.
Thanks
