No Backyard farm

Lots of sick and dead wethers today. Had some bales of alfalfa with high concentrations of poisoness plants. Its a wait and see now if any more kick the bucket. So far we've lost 7.

What was in the hay? do you know? good thing it was only wethers? or did you feed to the other herd too... that sucks. i had fed a round bale that turned moldy real fast and i had some sick ones from that but they turned around alright. Do you keep wethers for food?

Well we have a much better hold on the situation now. The University vet labs and my wifes lab work showed a wide range of culprits in the hay. One particular hay sample had Foxglove, Hemlock, Horse Nettle and Milkweed in high concentrations. Some of the sample showed elevated Herbicide levels and another sample show mold and then a large portion was just good straight alfalfa. So basically the wether's hit on one bale out of many I bought that was bad but my "Hay Guy" also known as Thomas bought it all back and has said he will pay for any lost Goat at market value, which is very reasonable as we only had a handshake contract.
My Wether's are all getting Charcoal drinks and boosts for any who need it. They are on a Goat feed right now but not eating much. It looks like all together I will have lose 12 wethers.
The Wethers which I had 30 of were 20 Boers and 10 Nubians. I had purchased straight Alfalfa hay for them as my hay fields are more diverse with Alfalfa/Timothy/Orchard.

Ok, for the most part the Wethers are on the mend. Electrolytes in the water and Probios in drenchs not to mention charcoal milkshakes for all, lol. The Wethers are acting more and more like themselves.

Glad he is working with you on your losses. Very honest of him but i think he should have know before this happened no? Must have got wet at some point. I thought your sheep wethers were being written about, so you also do the goat meat market?

Tell me about your pigs
