No electric NEAR coop and waterers keep freezing...

I was just out checking on the waterer and letting the girls out and the water didn't freeze solid overnight, there was a thin layer of ice in the trough but I was able to break that up with my finger, it appears that the snuggle safe did maintain the heat for at least eight hours (inside the coop) so todays test is going to be the waterer outside in the run with the rewarmed snuggle safe beneth it of course.

Good to hear that the water did not freeze solid. I don't mind breaking up ice twice a day, just was hoping the snuggle safe would keep it thawed most of the daylight hours. Still waiting for mine................maybe today!

I was just out checking the waterer and it is a bit more frozen (not solid) being outside in the run vs. inside the coop. I'm wondering if it is because I am using a galvanized waterer and if maybe one of the plastic waterers would be better, although I don't mind going out and breaking up the ice, most mornings I leave home at the crack of dawn and don't return until after sundown so I wouldn't be here to break it up. I think I might be going out to the Co-op to buy an extension cord and a heating pan.

We just ended our dependence on extension cords on our farm. We buried 10-2 underground wiring to the chicken coop and both of our main pastures. Now we simply have to plug heaters into the outlet and keep the water liquid.

I don't have any advice for keeping water from freezing that doesn't involve electricity or a flame.

Thank you for letting me know about your experience with the Snuggle Safe. I figured that they would eventually need to be replaced a bunch of times if they're getting nuked 2x/day, as JerseyGirl mentioned, but all they really need to do is keep the water above 32 degrees. And even one that doesn't hold the heat as long can be repurposed as a bit warmer for my horse, which I know he'll appreciate, or something to take the chill off the seat of my saddle, which I know I'll appreciate!

I'm off to find mine today!

Ive just started yesterday bringing down 5 gallon hot water jugs. I leave it near the heating light and it stayed thawed not a hint of freezing at all-it was 7 degrees out last night. I use that to fill everyone this am and take it home leave the filled hot one down there for added heat and water for the rest of the day...It stayed 30 dgrees in the garage/coop all night.

If the freezing weather isn't a regular thing where you are, you can wash off some fist-sized stones, heat them in the oven at 275 or so, and put them in a couple of gallons of warm water a couple of times a day. They give off heat for much longer than just the water and keep the water liquid for up to 12 hours or more if you're just in the 20's. I wouldn't put them in a plastic waterer, though.
