No more Leghorns for me

My chickens eat the avocados right off the ground. Dog actually will pick them off the trees, when he can reach a low hanging branch, bury them until ripe and then eat them. Here in Fallbrook Ca in the rural area most people are growing avocados. Our local population of coyotes, squirrels and other miscellaneous wildlife all eat avocados and seem to have no ill effects. Could they just be used to that in their diet?

Sorry to hear about Skinny II.

Bullitt if you need to get rid of avocados, send them my way. I loove avocados.

I love avocados also. Guacamole is the best. I was just guessing at what the chickens could have eaten to kill them. Obviously a chicken would have to eat enough avocado for the chicken to die. And that seems to be rare.

A dog that eats avocados?

That is interesting.

Does anyone have any idea what could have killed the White Leghorns but not the other chickens?

Have you had your birds checked for worms (with a fecal sample submitted to a veterinarian)? You might be surprised to find out that your birds could be carrying a heavy parasite load. I just had my birds checked, even though by all outward appearances they are the picture of health. The have both Capillaria and Cecal worms! The Capillaria worms can kill!!!! We've owned 3 brown leghorns. 1 was killed by a dog, and the other two got some kind of horrible sinus infection that made their faces bulge up by their eyes, and they basically wasted away until we finally culled them. No amount of meds did anything for them. I'd like to own another, but I won't get them from the same place. Maybe a reputable breeder. We're thinking these had some kind of genetic problem...
