Sad, but very well said, Q9.

This isn't Obama's fault or anything like that at all. It was introduced during the 25th of October by Lamar Smith, the representative for Texas. It hasn't passed either house at all.

if you read the bill ... or what was posted on the links... they want to stop the illegal downloading...

so to me this means sites like bit torrrent that was named... and napster (i know is down already) or any other site used for the illegal transferring of files... meaning that files that are copyrighted like movies and music will be banned

it will also prevent paypal from indirectly funding these sites by enabling people to pay for these illegal activities via pay pal

it will order IPS (internet service providers) from allowing access to these sites...

it will order the search engines like google, yahoo... ect... from linking to these sites...and force them to remove existing listings

face book as long as its used for its intended purpose will be ok

Last time I checked BYC was not participating in illegal downloading so BYC will be fine

Youtube will not be allowed to carry the illegal copyrighted videos... you will still be able to upload all the videos of your chickens doing what chickens do... and the pics of your kids playing in who knows what.... of grandmas pants falling down while she jumps on the trampoline because all of these are NON copyrighted materials

Oh, thank heavens! I was starting to get worried. Thanks for clearing some of that up, guys.

I read the first post on this thread and my heart just sank.

I've made a lot of good friends on BYC! I think it's a great place for those of us who not many people IRL have much in common with.
And besides, Facebook is the only way I can still easily keep in contact with my friends from Europe.

Youtube.. I'm not so fussed about. Sometimes I dowload music from there, but I can always start buying it again if this happens.
I'm not exactly as poor as I used to be.

Like Limewire? I'd love to see the looks on some of my friends' faces. A lot of them LIVE off Limewire.

I don't see why you would lose friends if that gets passed :hmm

We all live in different states, some in different countries.

I second this.

Australia is so isolated from everywhere and anywhere. Airfares cost a fortune, and God knows I don't have that much money.
I'd have to resort to snail mail with my English friends, and probably not talk to any of you BYCers again.

Yeah, and the world was supposed to end on May 21 of this year. And before that June 6, 2006. And before that Y2K. And before that, hundreds and hundreds and thousands of apocalypse dates going back to the beginning of when people began to have the concept of an end to their existence.

This all sounds like that. Mass hysteria tends to be the first indication to me that something isn't as bad as everyone thinks it is. I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that if this bill wound up actually in effect, you wouldn't even know it if not for the news coverage. Sure, I might sign into YouTube and find myself unable to watch Frasier anymore, but I figure I've been on borrowed time on that one for a long time now.

And . . . suppose ALL the stuff you think is going to happen ACTUALLY happened . . .

Remember prohibition? And how did that go, again? Yeah.
