I think the flip side of all this, do your best to be an informed consumer.
The way I would approach this same situation is, know if the bird I want is common hybrid, a breed, or just a brand, know where (in this case) the brand of bird I want comes from, ask the store where they get their birds, ask if they ever order from other hatcheries such as the one that sells the brand I'm interested in, and if not, what sorts of meat birds their supply hatchery sells. If they don't supply the meat bird I'm interested in, I would go home and research the particular hatchery to see if there is something else that catches my fancy that is available from that hatchery.
