Hi there my NC buddies!! I haven't been able to haunt the NC thread in my usual fashion, been too busy taking advantage of the warm weather and cleaning up coops and garden!! WHOOT!

BCSilkies- Sandy, I'm so sorry to hear that your husband has been ill, but SO happy to hear that he's doing much better!! I'm sure you're taking such good care of him!

HenThymes-LF you say?? Oh my, those are GORGEOUS birds, may need to be talking to you about getting some eggs or chicks. I sure do looooove me some fluffy Orp babies!

AB-CHICKS!! So happy that you're back in the chicken-keeping world (though you never really left) we need to figure out how to get you to post some pics of those babies!

Story-CUTE, CUTE little ones! Brunswick and Ray certainly won't be lonely now!

Gavin&Allison-Hope you guys are well. LOVING my chicken apron from you guys!!

Ugh, I have to perform chicken surgery tonight. I have a sweet OE girl with a large abscess on her wing. Here's the thread about it. https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=457969 Ugg, hate this part of chicken-keeping. Wish me luck!

Hi, Neeleys - I am new but might actually be able to help you with your abscess! I am a wildlife rehabber (or at least was before having babies) and specialized in wild rabbits - had a whole room full of 'em that people and the local wildlife hospital would bring to me. The poor little things would get abscesses like crazy just about everytime a cat got ahold of one. I know I'm talking rabbits and not chickens, but I kinda think an abscess is an abscess. So the thing that seemed to get the best results for me was to use a large needle to open up the would (rather than the razor blade) and then insert a syringe with a long skinny hard tube kinda deal on the end of it into the wound filled with a warm betadyne and water solution to flush it out. Then you can kind of shoot the solution in all different directions and really get in there without having much of an opening at all. In fact, a lot of times you can do it without causing pretty much any bleeding at all. I would do it a couple of times a day until you don't see any puss being flushed out and then continue to check it twice a day. Glad you got advice on an antibiotic as I am clueless there for sure. Hope this helps! I can look up the syringe if you're interested - I'm sure it has a name that I'm unaware of. Oh, and it is going to stink. Really, really badly - so be prepared!!!

GOOD LUCK!!!!!

Hi Neeleys, i was hoping your hen might be better, sorry to hear she isn't. She is such a pretty girl I hope all goes well for her and you, I am not to to bad with stuff like this maybe has something to do with changing many nasty diapers and bandaging ouches, If I was closer I would be happy to be your assistant.. keep us updated on how she does.. Are you going to be at the show Sat.? hope to see ya if you are..

My dh and I just found one of our game hens who had decided to go off in the woods to hatch some chicks ,she had been gone a week today, I knew she hadn't been killed or et because she would come home to eat, just couldn't keep up with her to find where she was hiding. Well today paid off and we found her, I brought her home and put her in big crate with food and water while dh got rid of the eggs, I wish they wouldn't do this they have such nice nest boxes and we don't care if they want to brood, but they are so much like the wild chickens of old that they must go off by themselves, but not good idea with the predators around here, she was hid good but most predators have good smellers..

WOW! THANK YOU!!! This is a huge, huge help. I don't want to make the poor little girl worse, I'm just starting to get the feeling that if I don't do something, she's not going to make it much longer. Goodness, wish you and Lydia could come on over and help me with this!

If you do happen to find the name of the syringe you mentioned, could you send it my way? Sounds like that is the route I should go. Not sure how to ask for it at TSC though? THANK YOU!!

Lydia-Thanks for the support! I was really hoping she would be better by now too, chickens are not for the squeamish, that's for sure! I love broodies, there just isn't anything cuter then a hen w. chicks!

So glad I could help! This website and forum have been so great in helping me plan my coop and future chickens that I am excited to actually be able to contribute!

It's a curved tip syringe (wow - I should've been able to come up with that one!) and here's a pic:

If Tractor Supply doesn't have it then maybe just a pharmacy or you could probably even call a vet and tell them you need one. I had to do that a time or two and they were usually happy to help. You can get betadyne at the pharmacy usually, too. Just make sure everything is sterile and that the solution is warm so they don't go into shock. Important for rabbits, and might as well just in case for chickens, right!?

Again, good luck!!!
