North Carolina

My goals are to have some hens to replace a few older ones for their laying. The roosters I would sell for their meat. I live "in town" as in town I cant get in Burnsville....lolol...so I cant have roosters. I'm torn as to how many chicks I want for my first time. I thought 50 but then I got to thinking...50 is kinda alot!!!???? Because I live kinda remote, and everyone asks me for laying hens I thought it would be a cool adventure to grown them from chicks and I could replace my older ones in the process.....Eventually I think I would like to get some different/ornamental/ prettier chickens....but still want them to lay eggs. I also sell my fresh eggs which is a high demand for me here. I loved the picture of the Lavendar chickesn!!! Would love to have one like that. Hint Hint!!!

Burnsville is in Yancey County. About 50 minutes north east of Asheville. Near Mt Mitchell. Google me...you will see Im pretty remote. Thats kinda why I was gonna do this for a summer and see how it goes up here.

Yes, I would deff like to buy local as to a Hatchery. Do yall ship like the hatcheries do?

Well, my dear sweet hubby finally started building my new chicken pens....

My little chickadees are loving their new digs!

My big baby was waiting for me on the back porch......

Good morning everyone!!

All this talk of chickies and ducklings has given me baby FEVER!! I even had someone from church last night come to me for advice on chickens (I had to laugh and say I was just a newbie...fortunately I pointed her in the right direction - towards the lady at church who runs a chicken business)!!

:welcome KristanB!! I promise you that any question you have someone here has experienced it or knows of someone who has. They all are very knowledgable, friendly and super helpful!! Ask away (I still do and I've had chickens for almost a year now!!)

Matt - I've never had a broody, so send some of that broody vibe my way please...BHep's had plenty of broodies and plenty of experience with it...me, I NEED to experience it first hand!! LOL Oh, and Barbara is absolutely beautiful!!

Double - I had a lady ask me if you "rent" out your lesson services!! (Said gal from above). I'm thinking this could be a nice side business for you!! LOL teaching all of us city turned country folks how things are done. I'd offer to teach her, as I had a great teacher...but I am so slow we know rigor would set in before I managed to get the back end opened and the entrails scooped out!! LOL

So just a random note here...sure glad we don't get our instructions from dreams...dreamt I was in labor for 4 days with no sign of the baby coming or the labor ending... LOL if that is to happen, Double, you'd better come over with a large animal vet and pull the thing out like they do for horses and cows!! Just saying!! LOL Oh my word!! Just what you all wanted to read this morning!! LOL. I'm going to fall back on the lack of sleep excuse!! Have a great day everyone!!

Newhomesteader, you make me very grateful my baby days are over! Not that I don't enjoy playing aunt and holding other people's little ones! I think my kids are afraid that when I'm a Grandma (long, long time from now!) I'll never give them back their kids. Little do they know, enjoying the baby and then handing it back is the best part!

Anyone who lives close, bring your birds or extra chicks or just come keep us company and take home some cookies or brownies! I'm really hoping this will be a nice success so we can have it again, maybe quarterly. Put it on your calenders, please!
