This boy is going to keep me guessing. At four weeks old he had more comb growth than any of the other chicks and I decided he was definitely just that. Then the comb quit growing. I swear those are hackle feathers, but at 12 weeks old roosters are normally a lot more obvious. Now I'm second guessing myself, this boy is a boy, right?

Still male.

2 each barred rocks and buff orphingtons at 1-3 days old notice difference in head spots on BRs
They were hatchery sexed as pullets.

The BR at 2 weeks one is much larger, feathering out faster with visible barring and has thicker legs both have dark patches on legs.

Same with the BOs one is larger feathering out faster and has thick legs.

The BR carries itself very upright acts cockish, but I thought that of my first BR and she layed our first egg when I started this chicken adventure. The BO is a little more timid but also caries more up right than the other 2 smaller birds.

Any thoughts did I get a 50/50 split this year on my pullet purchase.
My first group of birds are 4 now and all 12 where hens.

Too young. Please post pictures when they are at least 6-8 weeks old. Standing profile pictures in natural lighting are best.

Did you buy these at a farm store? I am guessing that you have misidentified chicks rather than two males. The hybrid layers will grow faster than breed chicks and a CA gray would look lighter than a Rock because they're a grayer shade. Your more feathered "Buff" also looks to be feathering in too light for a Buff. I would guess Tetratint or something like that.

Yes they were purchased at feed store locally and were being sold as Barred Plymouth Rock breed and Buff Orphingtons breed and others purchased there in the past from the hatchery they use have been true to breed specifications. They don't claim EE to be Ameracana or Aracana they are labeled as EE or rainbow layers.

I'm thinking pullet for both. The black bands just seem too wide for a male at this point.

Hmm, interesting... In that case, it looks like I have all pullets. I was kind of secretly hoping one was a cockerel.
