Novice farmer: should I be alarmed?

I strongly suggest you get medicated starter to use for the time being. If you want to switch to an unmedicated feed in two or three months, htye will have at least had some time to build immunity to coccidia. (I am assuming they are not vaccinated for coccidiosis? If they are, do not use medicated feed.)

Don't be too hard on yourself. It sounds like you were just doing what you thought was best for them. Live and learn, right?

My chicks are 5 weeks old and I wanted to move them outside this week during the day to an enclosed heated coop but its been raining cats and dogs all week. I still think it is a bit cold for them to be out at night. If they were inside in a brooder, you might be better off putting them back in there for another week or so.
