NPIP Certification

Hello all,
Where do you find information on what all you need to do to become NPIP cert.
What did you have to do?
I think I read it lasts 5 years at a time? cost?
And if you buy or bring any birds that are not from npip flocks than yours becomes null and void?
Is it the same as pulloreum testing?
Does someone come to your farm?
Does your palce have to be prestine? I am imagining a million dollar set up.....
Since there may be laws we may or may not be aware of what, are the pros and cons of becoming NPIP cert?

There are always so many laws and loop holes it makes it almost hard to do anything because you don't know if you may or may not be breaking a law somewhere.

Any insights are greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Moises

If the birds tested positive during NPIP, they can destroy/ make motions to cull all of your flocks.

That right there makes me so worried! I believe all my birds are healthy, but if one birds tests positive theyll destroy all of them..I love my birds and would like to become npip certified one day, but not if theres a chance if killing all of them

Quote: This is why my DH refuses to go through the certification. He does not want to risk having one bird test positive and the entire flock being culled for it.

Raising rabbits there is a disease called Pasturella that has no cure. It spreads like wild fire through a rabbitry. We lost two rabbits to it. Now if we hear a sneeze the rabbit is isolated for 30 to 90 days. If snot appears we cull immediately and we sanitize everything. Cage, feeders, water bottles, pans, etc... are all scrubbed, bleached, rinsed, sun dried and then we have a sanitizer we spray everything down with. It is all then put away for 30 days to make sure there is no chance of the germs living.

I just ordered my birds from Meyer's Hatchery. At the end, before checkout, I could order all the vaccinations and NPIP certification. What does that mean? Will they just send me a copy of their NPIP certification? Why would I need that?

Here is a link to information I found last night its a PDF that is 135 pages long from the USDA about NPIP cert. http://www.poultryimprovement.org/documents/9-CFR.pdf

My questions is I have a mixed flock of birds( chickens, ducks, geese, turkey, pheasants, etc.) and some of my chickens are mixed breeds. Does the chickens being mixed breeds have any affect on the certification?

I have never had any sickness in the flock but and terrified that they might tell me to cull everyone. What would they find that would make them want the flock culled? I'm terribly attached to my birds. The vet is due out soon so i'm keeping my fingers crossed.

here is another I just found on the government website-
